99 V70R EVAP/engine surge/P0455 code

Post by chrispassmore »

Hi all,

I've been having an engine surge for a while now..check engine light was on and a few codes came up- one of which was for the MAF sensor. I bought a new one to replace, and it seemed to help a little, but now we are back to where it was. Engine surges from 800-1,000 RPM's in part and often stauls on the first start up. Some times here's a hiccup in deceleration.

The only new code now, after a new MAF, is P0455 for "large EVAP leak detected....the ECM has detected a lark leak. Possible cuases: defective gas cap, EVAP cansiter broke or hose cracked, purge or vent solenoid defective and vacuum leak at engine".

What do you guys think? Main symton is surging when in park. I'll take your recommendations to the local shop (in case they want to charge me lots of money for a whole new system) and ask them to check each area out. I appreciate your help!!

Look at the canister hoses or any of the EVAP hoses in the engine compartment that attach to the intake manifold. This is characteristic of a large unmetered air leak.

Could be a broken hose near the rear of the car. Search around here. Where in RI are you? Car Emporium in Warwick is great for Volvo work and is something they specialize in. Also, in Foster, Price Auto Sales on RT6, ask them for Ray's phone number. He and his son are really good to deal with.
I have used both these places and am happy with both.

The canister on a 1998 V70R is tucked inside the front fender by the drivers side tire. You can usually see it from up underneath.

I'm not sure if it's there on a 1999, or tucked back in front of the rear passenger tire on your model.

In any case, check out the "J" hose or any lines running from that canister up to the engine compartment and purge valve.

Follow the hoses like the one with a red line on it here:
