Cleaning PCV - Reason to buy new parts?

Post by briderx »

I am going to be doing a PCV cleaning here shortly, Is there a reason to replace the hoses? I see that some of them get clogged or dirty, but was wondering if just cleaning them was okay? I'd definitely do fuel injector seals and intake manifold gasket, but is the rest necessary?! Trying to justify the $150+ cost..

Beyond clogging, hoses wear out with time, harding, cracking, softening, eaten by clamps. These won't look any good once comparded with new ones. Order these you can always return. Stick with OE/OEM parts.

Pricing for the "Kits" on FCP or IPD are 150 and from what i've read, not recommended because of lack of quality. Where do you get a quality kit? Price?

I've used flexible copper on the last three I've done in place of the plastic tube. I'm not a fan of the plastic they use, it's entirely too brittle for the application.

I just did exactly this PCV last weekend. I improvised and will post a DIY later.

This is a job that takes some 6-8h to do, so you don't want to go back in there for another 100K.
Stick to Volvo OEM parts, I spent $150 (same price as IPD or FCP Euro) but I got all OEM parts from Superior Volvo in Kansas City.

The Volvo PN 9471644 (the long tube that contains the vacuum pipe and the vent pipe) is a piece of junk.
The 3/8" plastic pipe broke after 2 years. What a waste of $40.

I ordered a new one but I ended using only the vacuum tube of this thing and substitute with heater hose (ID = 5/8", $6 for 6-foot roll at autoparts store).

Some people use copper pipe (the malleable type that people use to run natural gas line at home) but this is overkill.
The 5/8" heater hose is a perfect fit and allows more blow-by gas to escape (stock is 3/8").

This is a preview of what I modified, I will post a quick DIY later:

This is what I'd recommend (pricing from Superior Volvo in KC):

956561...oetiker clamp...qty = 4; $1.94 x4
976584...oetiker clamp...qty = 2; $2.00 x2
977964...oetiker clamp...qty = 2; $2.58 x 2

8653339...short hose to engine block...$5.85
1271653..hose to engine block... qty = 1; $8.76

1271654..hose to top of engine... qty = 1; $21.24
(I guess you can use heater hose here, just a guess)

1271988...oil trap $29.88

9146266...intake manifold gasket... $13.86

---> 9471644...piece of junk, save $40 for beer! Do NOT buy this. Use heater hose as I mentioned above.
The vacuum part of this, use standard vacuum hose.

A recipe for PCV project that ends with absolute success.

Only issue I would have with heater hose is it's not a compounded type of rubber that will resist oil , it's going to break down faster then a proper type .

Any chance you know approximate size of clamps needed/used?
