1999 V70 T5 PARKING BRAKE ADJUSTMENT

Its my kids 16th birthday, they start driving the T5 on Monday, and my parking brake was way out of specs. 9 clicks on the handle and anemic braking.

There is an adjust nut on the handle which ALLDATA points you to for adjustment - FAIL!!!
On my car, you adjust the clearance inside the rear brake drums (integral with brake rotor)

This changed on P2 cars to adjusting at the brake handle, and there have been reports of P80 cars without star adjusters at the wheels.

I did this one wheel at a time, on the car jack. No part of my body ever went under any part of the car in this configuration. If you need to go under, use JACK STANDS, no wood, trees, cinder blocks (NO NO NO) bricks

Warning - I replaced the rear brake shoes about 3 years ago and remember there was VIN number part change in 1999, so order carefully.

Block the front wheel diagonally from the rear wheel you are working on.

Block both sides

Whats wrong with this configuration?

Answer - you have to block on OPPOSITE side, not same side as lifting

Crack the lugs nuts before jacking

LHS adjuster hole (above lug bolt holes) in roughly 12 0/c position - ready to turn adjuster. Push down on screwdriver to turn outside face of star wheel UP to tighten on LHS. I got about 8 clicks on this side, and 1-2 clicks back to ease drum to turn freely.

RHS hole uncovers adjuster at about 11 o/C postion - also tightened by turning star wheel UP (push down on screwdriver). I got 12 clicks on this side, and 2 clicks back to ease drum to turn freely

End result - 4 clicks on parking brake handle in car gives excellent braking and holding.

Elapsed time 35 minutes for adjustment.
