Bearings finally gave out - got nasty loud.

This one is a bitch on the ME7 cars.

Don't have too much fun doing this! It is not too bad but just fiddly and time consuming. I did the alternator last year and the idler pulley, only to find it was the compressor bearing that was bad!

Just took my time and gave it lots of engineering words of encouragement! Watch out for the bolts, as I always find the engines manage to eat one or 2 never to be found again!

Pictures coming. The lower two compressor bolts were tough to get to. I used about 850 different combinations of sockets , extenders, and wobbles

Went back in under one hour.

You need to loosen the lower two AC compressor bolts to let the alternator slip up.

Once it's loose, release the main 12 VDC connector (13mm plus lock washer) and alternator light ( slip on) wires. They are a bit easier to do with the alternator loose.

Getting the ECU box out of the was important. Try not to put a lot of pressure on the AC lines and loosen joints there. You have to fuss the two lower bolts out around the radiator and wiring if you want to remove them fir cleaning, otherwise they only need to retract 2 cm or so.

I used a 1/4 inch drive to turn the two lowers down which fit nicely, but still only had space for about 1/8 turn of the wrench at a time, so slow and easy.

And , no, your fan belt did not magically grow while you had it off, you aren't putting it back on right

Crank....over alternator, down to AC, up from AC to PS, down to under tensioner , back to crankshaft.

14 mm box end on the tensioner on the 1999, I tensioned with left hand and installed last loop over the PS pump, with right. Release tension on belt by pulling wrench towards front of car or Left side of engine

Just replaced the serp belt on the T5.

It was 6 years and 81k miles on it.

That is too long for PM model.

I sold it to a Scot in Calgary, though.

My procedure for fishing serp belt....

FInd longest straight run of belt

Loop that under crank pulley and AC pulley.

With wire coat hanger hook, pull the ALT loop while dressing the top loop close to the pulley plane

left hand puts belt under tensioner

Apply tool (14mm Hex on mine)

Pull tool forward to gain slack, keeping belt engine side of tool, slip belt onto PS pulley.

Reset tool if necessary

Retension and pull belt fully onto PS pulley.
