2000 s70 n/a no spark

Post by Veilleuxpbd »

Hi all, this is a replacement (I didnt see a problem with doing this in the forum FAQ, sorry if there is) of a previous post I made (2000 s70 no start) since some information in that post wasn't relevant and the whole thing was hard to follow even for myself.

My car died on the road one min after leaving my parking, the battery icon popped up, then engine cel, and the car stopped. It would crank good, but not start. I suspect this whole thing was caused by a rogue wire, which briefly shorted the battery.

Know, what I know :
The camshaft position sensor is good
The crankshaft position sensor is good
I've cleaned the immobilizer antenna ring connector
The battery is good
The battery wiring is good
The fuel pump engages
Fuel pressure is good
The ECU communicates with VIDA

The problem : Car won't start, and when I remove an ign coil from the spark plug well and plug a spare spark plug into it (grounded of course) and try to start it, there is no spark.

I have no idea what to do, I have run out of ideas.

Check the voltage at each coil pack to see if they are powered up

Pin assignments are in a thread titled appropriately

The coils fire by grounding through the ECU on ME7 cars, so you are down to either supply voltage or ECU. I'm guessing your rogue wire put 12V onto the ECU ground and fried it.

Okay, Pin 1 has intermittent 12vdc when attempting to start the car, which from what I understand means that the ECU is telling the ign coil to fire.
Pin 2 has about 5vdc on it when ign is on.
Pin 3 and 4 are dead.

Does this mean that the ECU is good, but that the supply wire for the primary winding in the coils is gone?

I have rechecked my values on another coil because they didn't make sense to me, and I can confirm the previous results, only 'always on' pin is 2 with 5vdc, pin 1 is intermittent at 12v when the car cranks.

I have also checked the resistance in my ign coils, and compared them to one I took from another s70 at the junkyard and to the values from the thread you've linked me to.

Mine:

1-2 13Mohms
1-3 862ohms
1-4 3.7Mohms, slowly climbing (.02M steps per second) to 4.9Mohms
2-3 infinite
2-4 infinite
3-4 3.5Mohms, slowly climbing (.02M steps per second) to 4.9Mohms

Junkyard one:

1-2 13Mohms
1-3 840ohms
1-4 7.5Mohms, stable
2-3 infinite
2-4 infinite
3-4 7.5Mohms, stable

Abscate (other thread) :

1-2 infinite
1-3 852ohms
1-4 infinite
2-3 infinite
2-4 infinite
3-4 infinite

Hope this helps you help me :D

Also is there a difference between cam sensors on different models of p80 volvos? I had taken two sensors (physically identical to mine, this kind : http://www.mungoauction.com/cps2.jpg ) and compared the values to mine, and tested them on the car. None started the car, and values where identical, although one from the scrap yard seemed to be faster and have a clearer signal, so I've put this one in in place of the old one. Until I have confirmation that they are identical, I'll try to start the car with both sensors (once with one, then with the other) to eliminate any possibilities, but reaching in there for the connector is hard :x

Earlier I saw that you are missing the +12VDC power supply on pin 4. Did you fix your supply source? - All 5 coils have the same power source (from Fuse 11B/4 to pin 4 on coil connector)
