FDPP #4 - Nivomats needed in Delaware

Post by matthew1 »

foggydogg wrote: 23 Aug 2020, 09:41 After doing the timing belt stuff on my '00 V70XC, I decided to use most of my Rainy Day Fund to refresh the front suspension a month ago. On my way into DC for chemo at the VA hospital it suffered catastrophic head gasket failure; once I saw the needle swing up, it took some time to extract myself from the herd I was running with at 75, get to an exit and pull off. Motor seized at the stop sign. Expensive rollback ride back to my place in southern Delaware, and a frantic hour to get the project '98 V70R back on its hands and feet, I made it to the big city and back. The R wasn't really ready for Prime Time, but it's all I have to drive now.
One of the big issues made apparent now is the rear Nivomats are history; it's a real Flexible Flyer on anything other than straight-and-level.
The data plate shows it has 'M' suspension bits, and there is the remnant of a green stripe on one. While the recently deceased XC has Nivomats, it has the wrong code stuff, and I have the dream of eventually putting an engine in it (see 'Rainy Day ...etc. above).
Salvage yards in DE don't have many Volvos, and because I'm a man of a Certain Age, coupled with several underlying health issues, I shouldn't spend much time out in public anyway, even on the days I feel frisky enough to do do junkyard crawls.
So, here I stand, hat in hand, wondering if somebody in our little tribe can help me out of part of my predicament.
Thanks all, and thanks Matthew for setting up this link.

Just to clarify the header on Matthews' posting, on days when I feel frisky enough I can wrench on these projects myself; the '98 R deal is a bit more urgent since it's my daily (only) driver now. Fortunately, I have noplace in particular to go for the next week or so.
Thanks again.

The XC Nivomat will be better than the beat up R Nivomat for now. It will give you a nose down stance, but if I read Chemo you have more important things than you R's back pointing skywards.
I took the bullet and ordered 2 brand new Sachs Nivomats for my 96 R 2 years ago. Cost me around a grand.
Though this might mot be the best solution, most worn out regular (non R, non XC) Nivomats should get you the right stance.

I have 2 R Nivos I don't need anymore, but Shipping would cost a fortune a d take longer than you might want to wait.

I hope you get your health issues sorted!

Tricky using DE in the subject, listing your location on the right as Denver, and then saying you are in DE (Delaware)!

I thought maybe you were in Germany...

I live in the Philly area and used to run down to Seaford to service x-ray machines in the hospital there back before they built all the big highways. I'd take my wife and two young sons with me and they'd fish in the pond across from the Nanticoke hospital.

Can't help you with parts from the Philly area because the u-pull-it yards are mostly P80-free these days.

Danke schön.
Recyclers in Delmarva don't ever get many Volvos, much less twenty years on. As mentioned, it would be a risk doing the rounds, and then there's the rolling around in the dirt thing. Attached garage at the house gives me shelter to wrench when I'm able, and to stop when I have to.
The disabled XC is some distance away, not in a place where I can work on it, much less disassemble it, and as mentioned my fantasy is to repower it at some point. Kinda like the car and have too much invested to cut it up.
Property tax bill showed up in the mail today. Good thing I don't have any expensive habits.

Is there a cheaper workaround to get rid of the nivomats on a 1998?

you could use regular shocks and springs. but I doubt they are available for the R stance. It should work, though

I have a spare set in the garage, but need to replace the boots on them which I can't do just now as the stuff I need to do that is in a storage facility in one of many boxes. The boots need a set of aluminum bench vice clamps with 'v's' cut into them to grip but not mar the shafts. Then need to be held really tight so that the bottom eyelet can be cranked off it's thread. This allows the boot to be removed and a new one fitted. You can cut the old boot off first to give easier access to the shaft.

The boot if I recall is something used on a 240 Volvo, but for the life of me I can't recall what it was. It might have been a boot for something in the front suspension. Someone on-line (it might have been MVS) did a write up on this. As usual cost of shipping and time is the issue.

The nivo's are the green striped ones from an S70 AWD but they are the same. They could do with a coat of paint in some areas for protection but they are sound in terms of operating.

Neil.
