1999 S80 turn signal stalk failure; resolved by reseating fuse

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

1999 S80 turn signal stalk failure; resolved by reseating fuse

Post by Hendoo »

Greetings all.

I have a 1999 S80 non-turbo that has been in the family since new. It is now my GF daily driver.

A few days ago the turn signal stalk died. No turn left or right turn signals, the text window control stopped working, couldn't flash high beams, etc. Essentially none of the turn signal stalk functions were working.

The horn and wipers seemed to work OK. I didn't try the audio or cruise-control buttons.

This persisted for several trips over several days.

Looking in the owners manual I noticed that there was a fuse labeled "steering wheel module". So I pulled that and inspected it. The fuse looked fine, and tested OK with an ohm meter.

The fuse blades were clean, but I put a dab of "dioxit" on them and replaced the fuse.

Imagine my surprise when this fixed the problem! All the functions for that stalk came back to life!

So reseating the fuse cured whatever was wrong. So far it has stayed fixed for several days and eight or nine trips over ~120 miles.

I'm posting this in the hopes that maybe somebody else has a similar problem and maybe this will be helpful.

If anybody has any insight as to whether I should expect further trouble, please share!
