240DL Stalling Problem
For the last year I have been experiencing intermitent stalling problems. I sense it's ignition vs. fuel because of how "on then off" it is. If it were fuel, you would get the running out of gas sensation, instead of 'who turned off the ignition'. I have replaced the ignition control unit, the wiring harness to that unit, the fuse holder for the system [under the hood], the hall sensor, cap, rotor, plugs, wires. each time I install a new part I am optimistic that I have the problem solved. Each time I am disapointed that it still happens. Today I replaced the Hall sensor, cap and rotor. I went for a test drive and it died twice. what is different now is I no longer open the hood to jiggle wires, I just wait a while and it starts up.
What about the tach meter? Is it dropping down to zero in the same moment as the engine dies, even when the engine is still rotating. If it is, it is definitely an ignition problem. I have been in the same situation as you, changing the same component. Hoping every time that the fault is solved. That went on for a whole year. My problem was the Hall sensor, but before that I changed also the ignition coil. Please come back with a reply and more facts about your 240 DL.
