I ran out of gas, I know that was bad with fuel injection. Put gas in and it ran really really bad. Installed new fuel pump cleaned injectors and checked plugs to make sure they are good and gapped right. Now I can start the engine and idles good till I try to rev it up and it wants to bog down and die if I get to half way to the floor. When I put into gear it will bog down and if I release the accelerator and reapply gay slowly it will rev up and move slowly and get up to speed. It will not go into overdrive when I try to go into overdrive, it will bog down and try to die. I was told by a local Volvo mechanic at Certified Import Repair Inc here in Spartanburg SC to take the leads off of my battery and let the electronics reset and it will learn to run. Now I was born on a Tuesday but it wasn't this past Tuesday. I have been told by another mechanic that it could be one of my fuel pumps, the timing may be out by a tooth or even a vacuum leak. If there is anyone out here know what is making my OLD MAN do what he is doing please let me know what I need to do to fix him. He is my daily drive and I need him running to put food on my table.

I assume main fuel pump was replaced, and not the fuel filter, nor the in-tank pump.Edger wrote:I ran out of gas....
So, at fuel pressure regulator, on the Return Side to fuel tank, where the rubber hose is clamped on, remove this rubber hose, and insert a short hose on it, and direct it into a can when the engine is COLD.
Then have someone jump fuse circuit #4 to #6 for 1985-93 240 with a short piece of wire.
Does fuel come out?

It either means: Good News, or Bad NewsEdger wrote:fuel coming out of the regulator...
A. Fuel Rail is being pressurized to around specs
B. Fuel Pressure Regulator has shot craps.
After engine has run, take off the vacuum hose that goes to fuel pressure regulator...is there fuel there, or gasoline vapor?
>ran out of gas...Installed new fuel pump.... cleaned injectors...checked plugs
So, how were these injectors cleaned?
What plug gap?
Double check your plug wiring

I replaced the fuel filter that is in the back beside the fuel pump in front of the rear axel. Both pumps are working and are strong. Tested that before installing the new fuel filter. The old filter was clogged up, when I turned it over and poured it out into a jar the contents from the tank side was BLACK and looked like dirt. I did the old blow thru it and I could only get a tiny bit of air to go thru. I also had someone tell me that the relay under the dash should click 2 tomes and I could only hear one click and I replaced it with a new one. I jumped the fuses 4 and 6 and there was fuel coming out of the regulator like someone turned on a water hose. It was a steady and strong flow.
I can get him started and sitting and idling he runs good. When I put him into gear and try to go into reverse or into drive the motor wants to bog down and if I back off of the peddle the engine will pick up and seem to catch up and the RPMs will go up as I slowly press the accelerator just barely enough to pull forward. After a few seconds I can get him up to speed and as long as I don't try to do overdrive all is OK but he will also BOG down in overdrive. I hope this helps, if you need more info let me know. I will check the hose in the morning after I do my rounds and see if there is fuel or fuel fumes on the hose after the enging has warmed up.

1. With a cold engine running, pull off vacuum line to fuel pressure regulator SLOWLY, just in case 'old faithful' blows. What happens? If no fuel is shooting out of FPR, plug vacuum line, and try reving engine.Edger wrote:fuel coming out of the regulator like someone turned on a water hose. It was a steady and strong flow.

Yes, it sounds like fuel starvation, which is not related to original issue.
UPDATE:
After waiting for the clouds and rain to clear. I have tested the fuel regulator and it is good. Rail is getting up to specs. I have also checked the timing and its dead on. I was hopping it would be the fuel regulator but it is good. I have looked for any vacuum leaks but I cant find one.
So here is what happens:
I start the engine. Starts and idles with no problems. If while setting in park and try to rev the engine more than 1/2 throttle the engine will BOG down and die. I can Incremently throttle the engine(turn by hand) a little at a time and it will rev fast but will eventually start to BOG down and die.
After starting I can put the car into drive, reverse, dosnt matter, either way it will BOG down and die. I can start him in drive or reverse and the car will slowly catch up and I am able to accelerate gently. If I try to accelerate too fast it will BOG down and spit sputter and finally die. I can ride my brakes and keep the rpms up a bit and actually be able to stop at a light or stop sign and I am able to pull off slowly. I am still not able to go into overdrive, he just has a deep growl and if I let up on the gas the engine will smooth out and go back to regular acceleration. I have trouble going up hills due to bad acceleration, I have to drop into 2nd gear to be able to climb in incline. I have checked both fuel pumps and both are in good working order. New inline fuel filter next to the main fuel pump.
MAF sensor unplugged or plugged it runs the same way and was told by a local mechanic that would not make the engine do as it is. One man at another shop told me to take both battery cables off and touch them together to reset the computer in the car. (DIDNT MAKE SENSE TO ME) Said the car had to relearn how to run. I walked out shaking my head, if you don't want to help me just say so don't give stupid sugestions.
I am at a loss here. Is it a vacuum leak that I cant find, throttle body problem (It has not been cleaned), something else I am missing. I really appreciate everyone chiming in to lend help, it is greatly appreciated. If I am missing something please let me know. This is my daily runner and I need him in good working order so I can go to work dependly.
