I am hearing a distinct tapping noise in the engine of my 740. The car now has approx. 176 k miles on it. I am told this is a lifter. Is it something that NEEDS to be repaired or can the Volvo engine survive well with a worn lifter?
(My dad says it's really nothing to worry about....)
I do love that car, and want it to last a long time to come.
Probably one of the best cars I've ever owned, 15 years old and runs like a charm.
According to my service manual, the valves in the Volvo are adjustable. However, instead of screw and nut adjustment, these things use removable shims. I suggest you pull the valve cover and check the valve lash. Most of these cars should have the valves lash checked and adjusted as needed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. A little maintenance will help your car go much farther.
