can not get the stick shift into reverse

1989 240 Volvo wageon with manual transmission. Can not get the stick shift lever to the extreme left to the 'reverse position". The 'collar' on the stick shift slides up and down. It no longer lifts up so that I can move the stick shift over to the extreme left to put the car into 'reverse'. I can put the car into all the other gears easily,,,from first to overdrive.

What you need to do is lift up the shifter boot and see if you can adjust the stop bracket that prevents the shifter from going too much to the left. If that bracket is too much adjusted toward the right then you will have difficulty shifting into reverse. Also...make sure there is nothing binding around the shift linkage underneath the body.
