Volvo wont start :(

Post by Guest »

Well, dont know a whole lot about cars, but my 85 740GLE volvo isnt starting. Its trying to turn over, but just not chatching I guess. Could this be caused by spark plugs being bad? Its been shaking badly (whole car) while running, something it didnt used to do and had been gradualy been getting worse. I put some fuel injector cleaner stuff in, didnt seem to help. And its had trouble idling, when the rpms are too low it shakes violenty and dies.

Far as not starting, like I said, only thing I can think of is bad spark plugs, any other ideas?

Thanks for any input.

Spark Plugs, High Tention Leads, Distributer Cap, Ignition Coil, Ignition Amplifier.... all these are worth troubleshooting. I also had a new outer fuel pump installed. Hope this helps. :-)

If the previous options didn't bring you further (from the guy out Taiwan), you could check the following. Dismount the valvecover and measure with a feelergauge the play of the valves. They should be between 0,25 and 0,35 mm (0,3 and 0,4mm with warm engine). The play can be altered by changing the shims. Shims are removeable with the help of a valvelifter. Note: beware of lifting the valve in a sife position, otherwise the valve can be pushed against the piston. In case the play is very small or even zero, the valve is not closing anymore. This may cause a bad cold start. Symptomes may be: when warm it may seem a good running machine, but later on the cold start become more worse and worse. Maybe this will help ye. It 's very quick to check. Succes.

Rough running especially when hot can be caused by valve clerences but they will not cause a no start unless a major event in the engine took place, highly unlikely.

As I mentioned in the previous post an engine needs 3 things to run: compression, fuel, and spark. You say you have spark, but if there is no fuel .... You need to check fuel delivery, on a EFI system this requires a fuel pressure gauge. Common problems with Volvo's are the fuel pump relay, the fuel filter (if it has not been replaced for some time), and the fuel pumps.

In your case I would be checking fuel pressure, this could be caused by a faulty fuel pump relay, a restricked fuel filter, weak pump, fualty pressure regulator, or dirty injectors. I would also be doing a complet tune up, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor.

The 700 series engine is a great engine (B230) but it does need to be in a good state of tune

Let us know how you make out.
