94 940 jerks when shifting to park/reverse/drive (AT)!

Post by Yoohoo1 »

Hi there! Does anyone know what is causing my 94 940 to jerk when I shift to park, reverse, & drive (auto transmission), and, what I need to do to fix that problem? Plus, my gear shifter "moves/jerks" when I step on the gas from a complete stop & during braking! Sure my car's not new anymore, but, I don't think those things are normal?!

When I described my problem to my volvo mechanic, he just said "oh, it's nothing to worry about, let's wait to see if it gets worse."
Oh, I think not!! (I guess I just looked like a walking dollar sign that day! haha) Any insight would be so greatly appreciated!!! Thanks a lot!

Sounds like a broken mount if yoiu can see the shifter moving. Should be very little movement at all in the shifter. The mecahnic sounds VERY LAZY.

Good advice, Guest. My mounts are crumbling and I can hear the dash creak when the car shifts from 1-2 while under heavy accelleration. Summary: mounts can cause havoc.

Yeah my 92 740T does that, too. Any tips on how to check this? How hard is replacement? I've seen mounts on Ebay for 20-60$.

Thank you all so much, the mount was the culprit - it was in pieces. When I finally got that mechanic to put my car on a lift, it was as simple as him calling the parts place and replacing the part - took him about 15 minutes in labor (if that long). The transmission mount cost $37 and he charged me $30 for labor. The scary part is that the mount broke again a few months later (under warranty but big hassle anyhow).

Thank you!
