740 with a broken stick shift Topic is solved

Hi my name is Sindri and I live in Iceland, My dad has an 1987 740 gl.

I was driving it the other day and I smashed the manulal transmission (again

) and I was wondering if you guyes have ever switched from manual to auto transmission, and is a very much problem. It has a b-23 engine (I think) it has a carburator and I dont see any unusual electrical units, so do you know if I have to stick with my 5 speed manual or should I go for the automatic transmission.

P.s this car is da bomb so I would like to be working as soon as possible

You should go for a replacement of the automatic. It is a huge job to shift from manual transmission to automatic. First som guesses, probably is the gear ratio in the rear shaft not the same, so you have to shift rear shaft and probably also the driving shaft between gearbox and rear shaft gear. You have to shift the complete console in the car including the stick and all rods going down to the gearbox. You have to get a new radiator, because now you need an oil cooler for the auttrans and that cooler should be connected. The carburettor will need a special extra valve to increase the idle speed when the autotransmission is in drive position. The ERG valve has in origin a different stepless function, so you need some more components for that. You have to installl the kick down function. You have to install a OD relay and you have to make interlocking for the starter. You have to take the pedal away for the clutch. Most problably I have forgotten some more important points.
My suggestion, give it up!!!

This puts into perspective why automatic transmission is more expensive in the first place -- it's not just about the complexity of the transmission itself, but also about the other integrated mechanical parts (cooling, pedal, overdrive...)
