I bought an adapter from Sears that's 1/2" to 3/4". The 3/4 inch fits perfectly into the tensioner. Don't insert it 100% into the tensioner and leave enough sticking out to get a 3/4" wrench on. With the wrench one can easily release tension and stick a nail or allen wrench into the "hold open" holes when they are aligned. The Repair Database mentions using a C clamp or building a tool out of vise grips and quarters. This is far easier and the part was 7 bucks. (and its an excuse to go to sears)

Thank you for bringing this up. I have used the same sort of adaptor for several years now and didn't realise the 'make your own' was in the database.
This is going into the database.
It's a long way for me to visit Sears.
