2002 V70 Easy question (Serp belt)

Post by Mr. Detail »

Because I haven't run or looked at my car much in the last year ( working from home still) I wondered about whether or not my P2 has both a serpentine belt and a PS belt? I am thinking that the one belt serves both purposes. Also is it pretty easy to change out the idler pulley?

Thanks!

One serpentine belt drive water pump, A/C, PS and Alternator. If it fails, it can wrap around the cam drive belt and destroy valves.

volvolugnut, is it a hard job to replace the idler pulley? It looks like FCP carries a serp belt kit along with a new pulley.

There is not much room to work, and the hardest part is easing the belt tensioner. There is a special tool for this, but you can improvise if you have a large torx bit that fits the opening. Unless your tensioner has been replaced, you may want to replace it also. There are lots of posts on this subject if you search on MVS.

As above, for your 2001/2002 you need first to test your 3/8 ratchet with 14mm socket see if you have enough place. If there's a cap on the tens pulley put a long bar against the cap and tap gently with a hammer on the bar, the cap will jump off
With the belt off, spin all pulleys by hand and the alternator has a clutch pulley (see youtube how to check it)

Whenever I do the TB job (let's say every 100K-110K), I usually replace the serp belt and its tensioner at the same time.

I wrote a DIY for 2005 XC90 2.5T TB, WP, Serp Belt etc.:

Serp belt interval on P80s is 60k , so it would be due on any timing belt change

On my 2006, I needed a T-60 torx to take the tension off the belt. It is really tight quarters in there, so look for the shortest T-60 socket you can find, probably a 3/8" drive.

You can often squeeze the T60 in there and use a 12. 14 or 5/8 wrench on the shank to detension the belt - your T60 bit can be any of those sizes.

Easiest way to remove the serpentine belt is with a specialty tool...no need for a 2nd person.
