Hello to all. I am a new Volvo owner. Bought my '88 245 DL wagon a couple weeks back. I've been going thru it fixin this and that.
I'm to the V (drive) belts and that's where the dilemma starts. I'm looking to find info on what is the proper installation for all of the V belts on the car. I have looked around the net and also my maint. manual and have found conflicting info so you can understand the confusion. I'm not sure if what is on my car is the correct configuration.
Right now my belts are as follows.
Water pump, alternator and crank share a belt.
Crank and AC compressor share a belt.
AC compressor and power steering pump share a belt.
Once again thanks to all for any info.
Mike
Hello to all. I'd like assist with v belts if possible.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
This is a 'typical' belt layout on the B230F:
That appears to be the same as yours so it is right.
Bill.

Thanks for the info. Did more research, bought some belts today and got them on. Using your pic, I'll relay what I found/installed.
Belt 2 in the pic: There are two of these on mine in the same location as the pic.
Belt 3 in the pic: There is one of these on mine in the same location as the pic.
Belt 4 in the pic: Is only around the AC comp. pulley and the pwr steering pump above it.
Seems to work just fine. This is my first Volvo and the first car I've ever seen with that type of tightening system for the belts. Very efficient and brilliant in my book. The tentioner for the alt pulley was missing so I'll have to find another one. Any ideas? Thx again for your help.

Thank you for the update.
The tensioner will probably have to come from a breaker's yard or you could try our sponsor Erie Vo-Vo, link at the top of the forum.

A slight 'deviation from topic that maybe of interest whilst we are talking 'belts'..............
In July 12 I replaced my cambelt & 3 aux belts (240 Non A/C) with pucker Volvo belts. The previous 3 aux belts I fitted last time were Contitech ones.
On fitting the Volvo ones, I lined up the writing on the 2 that run to the alt. Then on start up the inner one slipped. I re-tensioned and it slipped again. Then after running for a while, got the smell on burning rubber......
To cut a long story short I re-fitted my old Contitechs after about 500 miles and repeated attempts at re-tensioning as the 'new' ones began to squeal awfully.
With the old ones back on all was quiet & no slipping.
Looking at the 2 together, the Volvo ones are 9.5mm width & the contitech 10mm. The Volvo ones had worn majorly:

The one with majorly worn teeth was the inner belt.
'My' Volvo supplier (FRF in South Wales) told me that Volvo only ever made and fitted 9.5mm belts to the 200 series.....
So on other sites GSF & PFV they both supplied 10mm belts. I bought a sert of DAYCO belts from GSF and all is good.
No idea why the 9.5's slipped, unless maybe running the 10mm Contitechs for 4 years has worn the pulleys

My power steering belt slipped as well - first when I routed it via crankshaft and power steering pump, then when I routed a different, larger belt via crankshaft, water pump/fan, and p.s. pump.
I eased up on the tension and it's been ok since.
Also, I noticed that my fan clutch was sticking, so I cleaned it with some degreaser and got it spinning smoothly again. I thought that maybe this might have somehow caused the belt to slip.
In any case, the belt had loosened a bit after a few days of initial wear, so I tightened it up some more and drove around for a bit. It's showing no signs of slipping.
