Advice? Rear coil spring repair

Post by karfed6591 »

Looking for advice...I have a 2012 XC 60 with 193K miles. It's been a great car, well maintained. Recently failed inspection due to a broken right rear coil spring. Does anyone have an idea how much this would cost to repair in CT/RI/MA? Also, would both rear left and right need to be replaced at the same time? From what I've heard, it's recommended to replace both at the same time. I only use this car for local travel, approx 4K per year. I'm undecided whether to put money into this car or not - any advice? It has some rust visible in front fenders/wheelwells, probably undercarriage, too - not sure if this impacts the repair of the coil spring.

"We keep them in stock" was the answer of part department manager at my Volvo dealer when I had this issue 3 month ago. Basically it is a very common thing that fails.
Question: are you able to work on your car(meaning place, health, time)? If the answer is "yes" and you have basic tool set and 2 jacks- you will be able to do it without any problems. Probably will take you 3 hours total for both sides. You will be surprised how easy you can replace those springs without any special tools. Depending on your budget, you can buy aftermarket springs from FCP and they will likely last you 3-4 years without breaking the bank. Make sure you will buy a set of rear stabilizer bar links and it will make your life way better during this work.
The only issue that might get expensive with rear suspension is trailing arm front bushings. They are notorious to fail, but if yours is ok.
So lets count- original springs were 200 each for oem(in my case), plus stabilizer bar links around 50(meyle or lesforder, I dont remember). I opted to replace spring insulators, bolts, but it is overkill. If on the budget you can get those rear springs for $70 each( lesjofors brand) and 50 for links=around 220 after tax?

With the rust a visual and hands on inspection is absolutely required. Should be straight forward for the Volvo mechanic who has been taking care of your diverse fleet all these years. Always in pairs regardless, especially with those miles. Let us know how it turns out?
