2007 S80 "Door Ajar" displayed Topic is solved

Going down the rabbit hole on this...could use someone with experience with this issue.

1. Initially was alerted to a problem when car alarm went off randomly this winter a couple times.

2. Presently the dash display will show the "Driver's Door Ajar" alert with the red triangle icon randomly while driving.

3. Presently the hazard lights with go off randomly in the driveway when car is locked. No siren noise just hazard lights.

What I now suspect is that it's the door actuator (doesn't look like fun to replace it). But here is what I've done to no avail;

1. First I thought it was the alarm siren; opened up the passenger fender liner to check its condition only to find it is not there on this model Volvo, its under the windshield cowling just below the fresh air vent to the blower fan at the center of the firewall. It's not exposed to weather here and I haven't opened it up to inspect. I have a used one on order.

2. Thought it might be the master door switch button assemble, replaced it with used one with no improvement.

3. Got in the car last night and actuated the door lock switch, first using key fob and then the actually push button switch. Pressing repeatedly Lock/Unlock sometimes the door will not lock until I press either the key fob or switch again.

Appreciate advice on this! BTW I don't have Dice/Vida.

****if I use key fob when the hazard lights are flashing, the lights turn off. Also...added alarm pic because couldn't find any online.

Get a scanner. Vida/dice might be a decent option. It is highly possible that your issue is in the wirring. Inspect connector between the door and harness. Sometimes they unlock and corrosion occuring(if i am correct about the style of this year). Another possibility wire shortening where harness goes through pillar and constantly subjecting to bending. With vida dice(other good scanner)you would at least be able to see what inputs from the door bcm is seeing.

I'll take a look at the wiring. Found a good video online showing this exact inspection. Both cars in the video did have missing insulation which was repaired with electrical tape. Thanks.

Well I thought we had it fixed! I examined the door harness connection and wires. Surprising the wires are in excellent shape! We did notice the the connector that sits in the door was not seated properly. We fixed that but we have the door ajar alert still.

Note: this connector is interesting, there are two locking parts. The side clips get pushed upward to release the clips, and then the flat ribbed part on top get pulled upward to disconnect the connector ( it literally pulls/ pushes the connector into place).

Anyway back to the drawing board on this one.

Also, this inspection revealed a bad lower door hinge pin, rusted and loose.

Ideally you need wiring diagram and scanner. Since you dont have either at this moment. Some time ago came across a yootube videos of xc70 front left door issues. Mechanic in the video traced the issue to the wiring through the body panel. He had to disassemble some trims around left leg rest to gain access to the wiring and the brake was there(dont remember if it was a typical zip tie issue cutting into wires vs just age related. Another possibility is lock assembly itself. Remove the door skin. Get access to the door lock. It should have 2 microswitches for open/closed. Ideally with wiring diagram you would know which pin at door lock is open/closed switch and with multimeter check if they are actually working with opening/closing mechanism. But realistically- take a bottle of electric contact cleaner and spray into the mechanism(door lock) with door assembled. Open close door several times- repat spray. Dirt can sometime get those switches stuck and contact cleaner fixes the issue. If money permit- just buy a good new door lock and install. It will be cheaper than scanner, hassle with vida to make it run, dealer trip(diagnostic 1 hour=180-200) so

This morning I use a basic diagnostic scanner to assess the problem with the door lock. I gave me a general driver door window error non-specific. I was able to actuate the driver door lock. It did NOT always lock and unlock. Basically the same as first reported in this thread. I sprayed contact cleaner in the lock from outside as best I could to no avail. There are a couple donor cars in local junkyard but not sure I can get window glass in the right place to remove without power to window. Might just order one online.

A lot of salvage yards will not let you on the premises with tools that can supply power(aka batteries, jump boxes) and tools that can cause open fire(torches). So it might be tough.
New aftermarket(not sure of quality since i am very skeptical of a lot of aftermarket parts) is not that expensive. Especially considering time going to the junkyard...

If you are a "renegade" you can take 9v battery with you to junk yard....

Installed a used driver's door lock actuator last night (and this f**ing morning). I did not have fun at all. The used part had some broken stuff on it which was fix with parts from original lock assembly. Everything is back together but when putting door panel on I broke a couple of clips and dislodged the push button lock arm from actuator!!!! Car will not have a push button lock on it until I get real bored and fix it. (It will be easier the second time, I'll elaborate).

Just a couple tips if you haven't done it before.

1. On this model Volvo S80 3.2 2007, the window is removed by lowering window to gain access to two 10 or 12 mm bolts that loosen a clamp that hold the window in place. The bolt heads appear in an access hole in the inner metal door panel, unlike other models there is no plastic bracket clips that you push while pulling window up. Much easier.

2. This royally screwed me up; under the threat of rain and darkness, I screwed the inner door handle mechanism of the outer door handle in place without properly aligning it. There are a couple of metal "nibs" or hook-like protrusions that mate with the opening in the door skin. I didn't appreciate their importance. I struggle to seat the door handle and outer lock until it poured down rain and I gave up. This morning with better light I sorted it out. I've added pictures in case someone is as clueless as me.

Door lock appears to be working fine so far. We'll wait and see if the random "door ajar" alert appears. Frankly at this moment I don't care.

That’s a really high quality wire connector , expensive too. Most other manufacturers use cheaper stuff that lasts the warranty period then breaks
