Volvo Repair Database OEM Suspension Only? Maybe not... WorldPac

Post by matthew1 »

Yesterday I spoke to a retired Volvo tech here in Denver who I list in the Volvo Mechanics forum here. He said he often buys rebuilt OEM parts by WorldPac at Car Quest stores. Axles specifically.

He said they've been just as good as OEM for his customers. Take it with a grain of salt. Just passing along what he said.

I have not verified this myself but I have heard the same thing here from my local parts reps @ Carquest. Since I just bought an S70 for cheap with a broke timing belt I will be looking into this for sure soon.

World Pac, I can confirm that Worldpac coils for a Lexus are OEM reboxed. :)

Ok, just did some investigative work. I spoke to a person "off the record" at WorldPac. Literally, he said "you didn't hear it from me."

They only sell to shops, note.

So what did he say? He said EMPI and FEQ are WorldPac brands, and they're very good. "I'd put them on my car. They are not remans, they're new."

Here's an EMPI MVS forum topic that leaves me with an overall confident feeling.

I asked if axles bought at Carquest had any markings or distinguishing features to ensure they came from WorldPac (if in generic or CarQuest packaging), and he said no. SO, without doing scientific tests on axles, there's my $.02.

Not sure about anything being re-boxed or brands from major retailers but I do know I ordered new EMPi axles from a good website and they are still made in China. So use your best judgement and read alot of reviews on axles before buying them. I will assume most of the axles you will get are made somewhere in Asia (like most anything we get in this country) it's just a matter of who makes them. I just have put some EMPI on my car and they installed very easily, no snags.

The joints were going back in the other one and another thing to look for that isn't mentioned often is the carrier bearing. Mine was making noise, hard to describe the noise but open both windows and see if the noise comes in from both windows (because the carrier bearing is towards the middle of the car). But when I compared the two bearings (old vs new) there was a big difference.

Another complaint I've heard is the EMPI axle nut is shoddy, but that's not true. It's not as good as the Volvo one granted (Volvo has a separate collar that spins independently of the nut, for accurate torque readings and not to scar up your hub I suppose) but it is oblong towards the end as a form of lock nut. I put it on with an impact gun so I know it's not coming off.

Well, in all honesty, the reman axles I bought at Carquest were 1 for 2, meaning one was bad. Not bad, so much as it was the wrong model. Heck, it could have been the Carquest guy's fault. Perhaps he made an error and didn't catch it.

Whatever the case, the axle has no circlip, so it popped out once. I have a temporary fix in that's lasted a couple months so far until I settle the matter with Carquest.

Don't take too much away from my experience, EMPI reman axles might last 500k miles. And what I have might not be EMPI. What I take away from my experience is match what comes out to what's going in, visually.

WorlPac for me has been hit or miss. I do applaud that most of the things I need for the drive train or suspension they have, in stock at the warehouse, which is literally a block away from the retail counter. I can get just about anything within about an hour.

Some stuff they don't even bother to re-package and it has the OEM Volvo label still on the box or bag. Some stuff they do re-package but it is OEM or at least a damn fine counterfeit that has the OEM numbers molded into the part.

Some stuff is ScanTech or APA/URO. Depending on what the part is that might be good enough in a pinch since it usually at least fits even if it won't last very long. It depends on how bad I need the car to be back on the road as to whether or not I will stoop that low.

Some stuff like seals are typical auto parts store parts and you really don't know what you are getting unless a brand name happens to be stamped on the part.

They are definitely another tool in the toolbox, I may not use them all the time but they sure can be handy to have around.

I own a small independent repair shop in a Northwest suburb of Chicago, (DesPlaines)
I have great success with World PAC. They provide great O.E. quality parts and many it is the actual O.E. part, just reboxed. For 6 years we have been very pleased
