'06 S60 Tire Replacement... Falken ZE-912?

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

Volvo Repair Database '06 S60 Tire Replacement... Falken ZE-912?

Post by LinksJD »

Just wondering if anyone has knowledge of Falken ZE-912s. I've read heaps of reviews and I'm getting mixed info on their quality and reliability. Although for the most part, seems most people like the tires for their car. Just curious if Volvo owners have or currently using Falkens on their cars. Do you like them? Pros and Cons? Would you recommend them? (Driving style: average.)

Thanks!

They were the top-rated tire by Consumer Reports in their Ultra High Performance All-Season category.

We just had these put on our '98 V70 XC. They were the loudest tires I have ever heard. It was bizarre. It sounded like a prop plane going down the road. We took them back. The tire place said that they had never had anyone complain about the noise, but once the new tires were on it was much quieter. Maybe it was a bad set, I dunno.

I had the Falken Ziex's 512 on my other car and all they did was spin like crazy. They hardly had any traction in the dry. They were bad in the wet also. Mind you, I had 16-17 psi of boost in the car LOL. I love my P6 Perrilli's on my S60 T5

Had Ziex 512s on our 850 based on CR's recommendation - tires were worn out in less than 10K miles. Within a month, the edges where the tread meets the sidewall were rounded over - not recommended. They were inexpensive, but you get what you pay for. No more Falkens for me.

Just put a set of proper V-rated Michelins Primacy MXVs on the car - what a transformation.

I had a set of 912's on my last Nissan. After 25k, they were wearing normally and evenly. They weren't all that great in the snow, but no complaints otherwise.

My 1995 850 Turbo has 319,000 km (200,000 miles) on it, with hardly any repairs required to date. It came from the dealer with a set of alloy wheels AND a set of steel wheels, shod with Gislaveds for winter use (5-6 months in eastern Canada).

I purchased four Falken 512's for summer use to replace OEM Michelin Pilots, based on "good" ratings and, primarily, cost. Initially, once a weird wallowing sound disappeared, all went well. BUT the front tires wore out quickly on the outer edges, in spite of regular tire pressure checks and a wheel alignment. They went to the back where, fairly soon after, the car developed a rear-end wiggle. Up on the lift we found one tire was actually showing its belts, and the other had had the belts shift. We moved front tires back to the rear, and installed new 512's on the front. However, from day one there was a balancing problem, and once finally corrected, these introduced a pull to the right, which two alignments failed to correct. Changing tires on the right side, front-to-back (these tires are directional), was the only way to relieve the pull to the right. (The 512 was at that time discontinued, replaced by the 912 , but the tire dealer still had 2-512s in stock, and I couldn't justify 4 new tires at the time).

Again, despite alignment and tire pressure diligence, the front tires have worn out very quickly on the outer edges, and I am about to replace all four with something else. (An egg-sized sidewall bulge developed two days ago on one front tire, and I'm temporarily running with two summers on the front, and snow tires on the rear). The tire dealer claims the 912s are a big improvement over the 512s, but once-bitten, twice shy, and in retrospect the OEM Pilots outlasted the 512s both cost-wise and performance-wise. The local Volvo dealer suggests Michelins or Fuzions as options.

If anyone has tire recommendations, based on 855 Turbo experience, for the next set of shoes, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

V-Rated Michelin Primacy MXVs. $660 USD at Costco (ouch!), but it feels like a competely different car. (Sorry, mine is not a turbo, but these tires are awesome).

I had these tires on my old Mazda 6 and they were fantastic. The grip was night and day compared to the stock tires.
