Update:

Incredibly fortunate that no valves were bent. Shop said, "the timing was off by half a turn". Super excited about this. They get'er going.

However, they charged me TWO hours of labor. I gave them the car with everything removed so they wouldn't spend time (and charge me that time) removing covers, bars, bolts, etc. All they had to do was throw the serpentine on and fire up the car.

Are these 2 hours justifiable? He even called me the day before he figured things out to let me know he was expecting a timing tool to arrive. Two hours to figure out that the crank was a half a turn off??

No, this test/observation does not help if I'm interpreting correctly that the issue is with the crank mark, that you don't know whether or not the crank is in the right place.

The cam marks will basically always be in the same place after two revolutions, although you should always check to be sure. But that observation doesn't tell you whether or not the cams are timed properly to the crank.

The solution here is to find the crank (or harmonic balancer) mark, you simply MUST find it and make sure it's in the right place. An 04 S60 is the same as on 05 S60 FWIW, though of course I haven't seen your car to know what you're dealing with.

EDIT: just seeing your most recent update now, after posting.

The shop charge may seem high but they saved your bacon and provided expertise to confirm proper VVT timing, two hours is not bad IMO. A full timing belt job is probably 3-3.5 hours book charge?

Thanks Eric. So, the repair is done the car is good to go now. I added a follow up question of the 2 hour and if it was justified.

Timing belt on this engine is about 3 hours of work the first time you do it. Well under 2 hours afterwards.

I'm the one who does everything myself. 2 hours is about how long the belt takes me.

I did consider why the forum exists and it was just thoughts to a question I asked. Wasn't looking for folks to jump in my bandwagon but seeking for honest dialogue. I am always more than willing to pay pro rates especially when I know my own limits.

2 hours is very fair. Guys had to spend time to find proper info about how to set up timming in this car( alldata os around $200 per month for ahop), they had to probably buy special tool which will possibly never will be used again if you dont have much volvos around (so around $45 for Amazon version of the tool), you need to pay tech to do the job, you need owner to make profit to be available to you next time you need them. Be happy car is working and no damage is done. Be thankful to tech to agree to work on it(in my area most of people start to make cross the moment I ask them to work on volvo and refuse as fast as possible). Dealer would charge all 3 hours.
