Hello team! I have a 2006 s80, which I'm sure the electronics on this abs are just like the s60, and I can't get the ABS light to turn off.
Message is.....Abs-Anti-Skid Service Required.
I think there's a fuse under the hood near the driver windshield area. Also I think there's a fuse in the glove box or under the glove box area.
Also I have heard that cleaning off the rust on the wheel hubs that trip the sensor, that the sensor reads from actually is another way to get this light to go away.
Any thoughts or can one of you fellas send me in a certain direction to me a certain direction for a certain area where to start?
Thank you!
Big Al

It would be best to see what trouble codes are stored. But a common problem on these (old) axles is that the tone ring will rust and break, causing a bad signal to the ABS system. You can inspect the tone ring through the wheel speed sensor hole. Just remove the wheel and wheel speed sensor, shine a flashlight down through the hole as you manually spin the brake rotor. You should see a nice even toothed pattern. If instead you see a flaky rusty cracked ring, you should replace them.
(my experience is with 2004/2006 V70Rs, I am assuming that the ABS tone ring setup is the same for an S80, but don't know for sure)

Ok cool.
I will do a YouTube search on replacing the ABS tone ring, hopefully it's not too difficult!

This looks like a good video on how to replace the tone rings.
I will inspect the wheel speed sensor wiring, and also shine a light into that opening to check out the condition of the tone ring.
Thanks!

There are multiple causes for this light.
Angle sensors etc etc.
Some ppl spent thousands of $ only to be back to square one.
A lot of us just ignore it.
PS: I have ignored this light in my 2005 XC90 for 10 years.
And the 2007 S60 for 3 years. Just hit the end button on the signal stalk to turn off the message.

In my personal experience the issues was always abs sensor or abs module(old 98v70xc). Save yourself money and invest in midrange scanner available to read abs codes. I can suggest icarsoft volvo gen 2 or gen 3(more money and you likely will only need gen 2 features). It will cost you $130(for gen 2). Dealer diagnostic will be better but will cost close to $200. Ofcourse if able always go with Vida clone(I have icarsoft and vida. Honestly I use icarsoft way more often and it is easy to use and highly practical).

This anti-skid tech from Volvo is really not that great.
It just reduces engine rpm to "correct" the skid.
You can live without it.

Okay so I checked the ABS rings on the front two wheels. They are perfect not brand new but definitely are not broken.
I also wipe down the sensors while they were out of the wheel, but there was really nothing on the sensors.. just wiped it down for good measure!
I ran out of time and I couldn't check the back ABS sensors on the two rear tires.
I'm going to assume that those are good as well because the car was well maintained before I bought it.
Any fuses or easy things to check? I don't have access to a code reader for Volvo, I know that would help me immensely.
Thanks in advance!

"...back ABS sensors..." so this is AWD. That could bring in issues with the differential electronic module (DEM) which is also notorious for corrosion and failure in old model cars. (I'm pretty sure a DEM failure will set the anti-skid message, but again not certain)
I'm with Vova585 on this one. If you have a two-decade-old Volvo that you want to keep running, and don't want to pay a shop diagnostic every time something goes wrong, I can't stress enough how useful it would be to get a scan tool. You can look for blown fuses but usually we aren't that lucky.

Hi thanks for the reply! I think I've been convinced to get a scan tool lol.spinard wrote: ↑15 Aug 2025, 06:57 "...back ABS sensors..." so this is AWD. But also it is not an all-wheel drive so maybe what I was looking at in the rear of the vehicle was something different it sure looked like a magnetic sensor.
Scan tool here we come. And I will get this sorted.
