Hello,
New to the forum, but not to working on cars. I have a 2007 XC70 3.2 ltr that has a LOUD bearing noise coming from the angle gear box. I can isolate or locate the noise when the vehicle is on ramps. The bearing noise is not present on cold start up but becomes loud and persistent when warmed up - approx. 10 minutes at idle. The noise does not change with engine rpms and is present when the vehicle is in park. Does the angle gear mechanism have something inside that is constantly turning at idle? Stated another way, what is turning or rotating at idle in the angle gear housing? It would seem to me that the angle gear would not be engaged at idle or while in Park. As an aside, I can definitely tell you it is NOT the alternator - as I changed it with a new alternator. Any insight would be appreciated.

Is the AWD working? It could be the angle gear collar has failed and it chattering on the remaining splines on the angle gear. However, if it is making the noise at idle and the car at standstill, it seems unlikely to be the angle gear itself, but could still be the collar.

There is no READ mechanism in an 07 XC70. Or are you suggesting it's not an 07 and actually has a 3.2L engine?

The loud bearing noise happens at a standstill, not in any gear. It is registered and titled as an 2007. It definitely has the 3.2 ltr. Since I do not know this angle gear set up, does something inside the angle gear rotate at idle without it the car being in gear? The reason that I ask is that sound can transfer and it could be transferring from somewhere else if nothing inside the angle rotate at a standstill and/or out of gear.

i'd say no to angle gear. theres not awhole lot rotating when out of gear ,
i would revisit the most recent repair, alternator. Remove the acc belt , see if the noise goes away.
a $15 stethoscope will locate the source quickly.

Hang on, I'm confused. The OP says it is a 2007 XC70 3.2 liter? That's a P3, but I thought NA did not get this model until 2008? If the car is a P3 then the READ does come into play.

The 3,2 was used in the xc90 p2 chassis all the way to 2014, maybe it was offered as an option in the p2 late in that year?
On edit, ca resources say no. My guess is the car is a 2007 build p3 chassis with an incorrect model year registration

Again, so sorry for this misinformation about the year. Really dig this 2008 XC70 and want to keep it. Got the year confused with my C30 T5. (I own four Volvos: 1997 850 one owner with 125k; 2007 C30 one owner with 150k; 2003 V70 5 speed manual with 175k and this 2008 XC70).
