Digging out. Have to say Eugenia, the new xc90, just blew out of 12 inches of snow and blow like it wasn’t there

Kid called this week that the 2008 S60 is losing coolant. Bummer as that is the nicest and lowest mileage Volvo in the fleet. Hoping the negative double digit (F) temps didn’t take out the head gasket on warm up. Told him to check for external leaks…likely will send to my independent mechanic if it doesn’t heal itself with warmer weather.
Acquired a 2017 Focus last week so at least have a spare if/when it goes in the shop.

Used my P2 to drive up to Davidson County TN just south of Nashville. With 4 chainsaws and a few coolers in the back 4 of us helped do some tree cleanup the last 2 days. The southerners were biting their teeth while I safely drove over the icy roads. I am so fortunate that ice storm shifted north of me. I did notice freezing rain on Saturday afternoon but after sunset the warm gulf air came up and increased the temperature back to 40f.

I'm with vtl on this one. I think it is unlikely the head gasket is the issue. More likely a hose is leaking and just needs nipped up due to the cold. Maybe also need to check the heater core if nothing else found.

Coefficient of expansion of aluminum (typical thermostat material) is about 30 percent more than stainless steel (typical hose clamp material).Krons wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026, 21:14 Kid called this week that the 2008 S60 is losing coolant. This might be enough for the clamp to get a little loose if temperature drops a lot.
It might only leak on startup until everything warms.
