To avoid breaking the rear parts of the splash guard.... ALWAYS remove the 2 rear bolts first. Then as you remove the 5 bolts, loosen them first, this way, it does not create cracks in the plastic. As you remove the 5 bolts, support the splash guar with your hand.
Back to the original question...just drill a hole in the remaining plastic and use zip tie. I did that 10 years ago, so far so good.
