My wife's car has been losing coolant a while. Can't really pin it down. I'm worried it's either the heater core or the turbo line.

if its the heater core there should be that faint smell.
if its going through the turbo it should make white smoke, if its external it should leak onto the ground.
i found the coolant bottle leaks with soapy water, tiny cracks in the corner molding
also found the thermostat to hose coupling has chalky deposits on the new housing,
its obviously boiling off but doesnt affect the level..yet.
top radiator hose is wet at the rad clamp, looks dry but if i wipe the underneath of the clamp its damp, so its seeping there too.

Also check the coolant bottle cap. Remove it and look for white residue around it. If there is, clean it all off, refit and check again in a week. If it returns then it needs a new cap.

Had a chance to investigate today. Thankfully leak is external. Ordered a $20 coolant tank top exhaust gas/head gasket tester and it passed.Krons wrote: ↑27 Jan 2026, 21:14 Kid called this week that the 2008 S60 is losing coolant. Bummer as that is the nicest and lowest mileage Volvo in the fleet. Hoping the negative double digit (F) temps didn’t take out the head gasket on warm up. Told him to check for external leaks…likely will send to my independent mechanic if it doesn’t heal itself with warmer weather.
Acquired a 2017 Focus last week so at least have a spare if/when it goes in the shop.
Unfortunately looks like it could be water pump, told him to send to my Indy to investigate. Water pump was done in Nov 2024 with the full FCPEuro timing belt kit so I may get to use lifetime warranty.

Can you recall the pump brand? As you probably know, they can leak when cold through the weep hole on start up and also on cooling but not at other times.

Been busy the last few days. I believe I have cracked the 07 to 06 folding mirror wiring finally (I think!). All there is left to do is to physically install the 2 mirrors, except, when I cleaned the units prior to installing I found that the rubber gasket between the mirror unit and the door frame on the driver's mirror has lost sections due to the rubber crumbling. No problem, just transfer the 06 gaskets. Hm.....
Nope! The 06 and 07 have different gaskets. The 06 has 2 wiring harness sections running through the gasket and the 07 has only one larger harness going through a single hole which is slotted. This allows you to swap the gasket on an 07 really easily. The 06 you have to de-pin the connector as the harnesses pass through solid holes in the gasket. So the 06 ones cannot be swapped. Great...........
Fortunately one of my local Volvo buddies sent me a 22% off coupon for Volvo of Markham in Ontario. So I ordered up both the left and right side. RHS =$15.50 CDN. LHS =$32.50??? What??
I also ordered a replacement tailgate spoiler brake light unit as the one in the spoiler by my mechanic buddy throws a brake light error when connected. So I will fit a new one in the hope that resolves the issue. Finally as I am also installing a back-up camera that fits into the rear license plate unit (it replaces one of the light units with a camera+light single unit), to connect the light part up you have to cut off one of the light bulb sockets. As one is broken anyway, I will use that one and if I have any issues with the camera in the future I can refit the standard lighting, so I ordered a spare light harness. It was cheap enough.
Placed the order, the parts guys at the dealer were super helpful and concerned my order mixed 07 and 06 parts on an 06 Vin#. We sorted this out. Then I get a note later that one of the 2 mirror gaskets ordered (the LHS one I really need) is on back order. Also the tailgate spoiler brake light unit is also on back order, neither with an ETA. I know the light unit is in stock at GCP.se where classic parts come from so hopefully that will be delayed only by shipping from Sweden. The gasket however is not in stock. Ho, hum.
The only good thing is that the dealer only charges me 5% tax, and not their local 13% that all the other Ontario dealers charge as we only pay 5% locally. Downside is they charge a small shipping charge. Still on a $230 order I still saved nearly $50. Make a former Scot happy!
I also helped another buddy diagnose his 2011 Mercedes ML350 diesel with oil leaks. The occasional non-Volvo strays into the garage to help out friends. He still owns my former 00 V70 base. As he also came bearing gifts (spare parts no longer needed) he is forgiven!
Then yesterday a panic call from my friends son. His 06 S60 2.5T AWD has gone into limp mode. Can I help?? He limped the car over and I scanned it. 3 codes. Engine throttle peddle position signal error, P0089 - fuel pressor sensor signal error, and finally a Cvvt error message for the exhaust cam. That last one is annoying as my mechanic buddy swapped that for a good used one about 6 months ago.
I had a used but unknown state pressure sensor so we swapped that over as having cleared the codes, as soon as he backed out of the garage the car went into limp mode again. Back in and swapped the sensor. He almost got home and the sensor code came back on along with the fuel pressure sensor code. Darn.
He has ordered and receive now a Bosch unit and plans to swap it himself, but I fear the throttle body may need to come of for a clean or replacement. That is a job I hate on a turbo P2!! I still have the scars on my arms from the 02 XC70!!
Good news is I am told the cam cvvt has not come back. Possibly it was a historical issue? We will see.
I am not convinced on the fuel sensor being the issue, so have ordered a fuel filter as the current one looks ancient. The fuel pump was fitted by Volvo about 4 years ago so hopefully that and the gasket are good and still under warranty.
Next was a planned visit of the V50 T5 AWD manual. This car may be getting m oved on after the summer due to a growing list of issues that will cost a lot of money to fix. Also with areas of body corrosion and high mileage it may be pensioned off. Owner still loves it but repairs are mounting up. We did swap over the exhaust CVVT solenoid on that as it was one 'borrowed' from my mechanic buddies broken C30 until a new one could be sourced. Job done!
Now back to the 06 V70 AWD. Looking at the head unit swap and back-up camera install. Decided I will chicken out and get the local installers I have used to do the job. A replacement bluetooth single Din unit is currently fitted so no idea what kind of mess has been done to the wiring harness during that install. I'll also get them to install the folding mirror button while the center stack is out.
Then I found that the supplied head unit bezel is a bad fit. These modern head units like the Alpine unit I am installing have no built in bezel so end up with a gap of about 2mm all the way around which looks like crap. Even the installers said they have not seen another bezel as poor and that is the go to for the like of Crutchfield. I have now ordered a couple of options off Ali-Express so will see how they look when they arrive. So all V70 AWD projects on hold awaiting parts!

There is no pattern as to when the 07 S60 2.5T loses coolant whether hot or cold. Don't always see the leak or drip as the car is driven only once or twice a week by wife and kid. From time to time there will be a 6" wet spot on the asphalt and then it dries up. I did see coolant once while it was dripping on the ground. It's was at the arrow on the plastic above the transmission cooler line.
Question: Is the black plastic for the transmission fluid outlet molded with the radiator or screwed in? Some radiators have a brass connector and mine is black plastic. I've topped off approaching a gallon over a 6 month period. The good thing is the transmission fluid is not cloudy.

On the older style with the brass fitting I have had issues with the seals for the brass fitting leaking. Fortunately a good old fashion radiator show was able to repair it for me. If the plastic is leaking, then it may have a crack starting in it. From my experience, that is usually caused by a failed engine mount under the crank pulley allowing the engine to move and flex the radiator connections on that side.

VTL your solution works brilliantly. Placed my good chip valet key as pictured and duct taped it securely. Shoved the harness and antenna ring back under the column and popped in a eBay replacement ring. $17 for two spare key blanks, $21 at locksmith to cut…problem solved!
Working through a list of other items on this 05 XC90. Replaced the rear hatch opener mechanism and latch. Opener was rusted like all of them and hatch wouldn’t open due to cable on opener latch being broken. $150 in eBay parts and we are back in business. Opener changed in later models so had to dremel a few areas for clearance but all is good.
Now the real hack job. Center console on these is removable and the latches (like all mid-2000s plastics) known to break. I’ll fix you. Even color matched the caulk—that’s not going anywhere. Also had to JBWeld the console lid…ugh these plastics.
