VIDA DiCE 2014D vs 2015?

Post by Jonboy74 » Sat Dec 29, 2018 7:41 am

Hi everyone,

Let me preface this by saying I'm a computer geek - I fully understand Windows and VMware (for those of you familiar with the posting about running VIDA as a Virtual Machine). I'm actually an IT Director for a large IT services company here in the US, and before that I was a senior infrastructure engineer....so installing and troubleshooting PC software doesn't bother me.

I'm considering getting VIDA and a DiCE module, but before I jump in, I'm trying to make sure I understand the difference between 2014D and 2015. If I am understanding correctly, 2014D is the last "offline" installation, and 2015 is "all online" and requires a subscription.

Am I right so far?

If I do order one of the knock-off DiCE units from ebay/amazon/AliExpress, is it possible to still get subscription to download software for my 2002 V70 2.4T via Volvotechinfo.com using 2014D? https://www.volvotechinfo.com/index.cfm ... ida.repair

If not, will the knock-off DiCE units be allowed to use the subscription service for 2015?

Thanks,

Jonboy

Before 2015 the VIDA database was distributed on DVD. The community figured out hack the local server settings so that it run without any external connections or a VIDA subscription. Back then there where a lot of issues due to the issues of IE11 being written for Windows 8 and VIDA 2014D had installer setting that would only allow it to be installed on Windows 7 pro. The RePack is script based install that is the accumulation of all or most of the hacks that where done in the past.

2014D was written in 2015 and does include at least the first quarter data for 2015 cars. For your 2002 V70 2.4T your best path is use the 2014D_RePack. Your find everything you need here on page 1 and page 6. It won't hurt to read all the way through the thread, there are a few tweaks in there that are not included in the RePack.

In 2015 Volvo moved the database from a local server (localhost) to a internet based server. There is no way to get VIDA 2015- working without a VIDA subscription which is too cost cost prohibitive for DIY. Look at the subscription pricing.

Here's my question: is the ability to download software (say, if I replace a faulty module that requires a software download in order to work), ONLY available with 2015 and a paid subscription? Or is the module software included in 2014D?

If software downloads are NOT available using 2014D, then I would suggest that paying $63 for a 3 day subscription is not cost prohibitive for a DIYer for the purpose of getting the correct software download to be able to add/reprogram a module in the car.

If the software IS available on the 2014D without a subscription, than this logic makes total sense.

Thanks,

Jonboy

Go by a Volvo dealer and find out if there are any Complimentary Software Updates for your year and model. At the same time they can tell you the state of the installed software.

Software updates on clone hardware and old unsupported software would be rather improbable, Volvo has tighten up the distribution of software upgrades. At one point even a licensed independent shop had to go through a dealership to do software upgrades.

I have not come across anybody that has successful done DIY software upgrades, just a few that insisted that it could be done ... never did hear the end of their story.

That's not my point at all. Volvo isn't going to give me a complimentary update for a module that I replaced myself. I'm trying to avoid paying dealer prices. I have a door module that I need to replace, which will most likely require re-programming/software download/update. Can I do that with 2014D, or will I need 2015?

Thanks,

Jonboy

You can't do software upgrades as an independent person with 2015 because it's not available to the public. Not even as a cracked version. I haven't seen it for sale anywhere. Not yet anyway. If it were available you would be back to trying to foil Volvo's security measures. From the link above provided by Rick Hale Parker: "Charges apply for new software required as part of a repair or accessory installation." Also: "If you had an aftermarket control unit installed and it was not the correct part number for the specific build date of your Volvo this will affect the software. In these cases, either a software package may not be delivered or, in some rare cases, the control unit may become disabled and require replacement with the correct part number" So look out!!

None of us here even know what 2015 looks like let alone what functionality it has. Only dealers know the answer to this question as only dealers have the software. If a dealer employed person were to post anything here about how things work in order that we may circumvent using Volvo dealers they may find themselves very quickly out of a job I am quite sure.

Both 2014D and previous Vida versions require subscriptions if you want to use any download functionality such as software updates or reloads to modules.

All software updates using previous Vida software use the internet to substantiate the Vida software license on your PC (if not a cracked version) then once payment method is provided through Volvo's payment gateway the software is released to the VIN you specify and to the PC with Vida you applied from. All software updates are NOT ON the Vida software. They are all stored online. Vida software provides the part number for the software update specific to your car model/VIN. You CAN get a temporary Vida License from Volvotechinfo.com and use a genuine Dice tool IF you can afford one.

To get any cracked version to do updates via Volvo's server is impossible because of the security measures in place. The cloned Dice tools can now be recognized by Volvo's servers and are rendered useless unless they are genuine Dice tools.
But read on (there is hope yet!!) as I and many others here have successfully replaced/reloaded software on our modules by using a cloned Dice connected to a couple of guys who are forum members here who have managed to extract the software (actually it is firmware we are replacing not software)

I have successfully cloned hundreds of ETMs (throttle modules) for my module replacement business as well as a handful of ECMs, CCMs, BCMs, DDMs and PDMs and CEMs by using Henry or Sergey's services (MVS username Doublebug and Yagger). You need a Dice, a USB driver for the Dice installed and the connection software they use which they can send by Team Viewer or Skype. When firmware can't be read on a faulty module that is totally offline they will guess which firmware will suit based on your year and model and try it on your module until it works correctly. They have a large database of firmware that has been pulled from various modules they have read and cloned.

Most of the firmware is 256KB and ranges up to 2MB so we aren't talking about huge download times. Door modules are a breeze for these guys. They simply read the old firmware from the faulty module, save it to their PCs then download it to your replacement module. The firmware fitted to each module on your car is viewable by using the NETWORK feature in Vida. If you purchase a used module you can check the firmware version on it by means of viewing the 2 x software numbers within Vida while it is connected via the Dice tool.

Henry and Sergey charge a small fee for their time.
0h and just because some of the other forum members haven't done this yet that doesn't mean it can't be done. There are multiple instances of users here on MVS using Yagger or Doublebug's cloning service to restore their throttles or other modules to the correct software with great success.

Note to all , Henry and Sergey are guys with lives and real jobs on top of this service. They are not on 24 hour Volvo emergency responders to people who brick their car and need to get to work in the morning.

Plan accordingly.

Hi RickHaleParker - I attempted to download the RePack ISO, but the link seems to go to China, and none of the links on the page seem to pull the ISO. they all go to *ahem* questionable sites.    Lets just say I'm very glad my children were asleep!

Can you confirm the correct download location, please?

Thanks,

HEAD --> DESK

Its been a LOOOONG time since I've done anything with Bit Torrent, and no, I didn't realize those links were BT links. I was half asleep.

Thanks for pointing that out - I feel really silly.

I downloaded and installed qBittorrent, and was then able to download the ISO without issue.
