1996 Volvo 850 NA axle CV boot advice needed

I installed an EMPI axle on my Mercedes back around 2015. Its outer boot lasted about 4.5 years and maybe 35k miles before finally splitting. That seems decent as a worst case scenario. Surprisingly, the axle didn't give me any hassle either, despite being shorter than the original.

Yes, GKN is stamped on the boot and axles of the 1999 NA Volvo front axles I pulled from a junkyard. That's what I would trust more than anything.

OK update:

Looking at the information on the linked thread, it lists GKN # 300497 as the INNER boot for a 1996 850 NA auto.

When you look at the attached link to FCP warehouse, it lists the 300497 as available, but when you look at the listed compatible Volvos it is ALL early P80 Manual trans and not AUTO?

Can someone confirm if the inner part number for a 1996 850 NA Auto is 300497 or should I use the alternate 300597 which is suggested for an Audi?

Also, did anyone look at the Meyle kit I linked earlier? Any thoughts?


I am still waiting on a response from AutohauzAZ on the CV boot options.

You may want to get an echo from a third party but here is how I order my CV boots for auto trans cars/axles:

There are two kinds of outer CV boot, NA and turbo:
NA (small CV joint) outer boot GKN 300427
Turbo (large CV joint) outer boot GKN 300439

There is one kind of inner CV boot, fits either NA or turbo:
Inner boot GKN 300597 (this is "the Audi boot")
I've been using these GKN Audi spec inners for years and not had to re-replace one yet.

Manual trans cars/axles I have never sorted it out, it may be in the forum I don't know.

As per gmh earlier in this thread, for the auto trans axle boots everything was figured out and posted clearly in the first post here by northernlights » June 30th, 2014 viewtopic.php?p=332235. The rest of the five page thread adds zero new information except to confirm the first post was spot on. I suggest for anything other than the first post take it with a grain of salt; after the opener there is speculation and likely misinformation that doesn't amount to anything useful.

Thanks Erik! It was the FCP web-page that threw me as everyone in the early post seemed to suggest the inner was NLA as part number 300497 that was not sold in North America but it is on their website but not listed for an Auto trans car. I will take your advice and go from y our experience and use the Audi part instead.

Looks like it has become a moot point for me now. After working with the owner for the last couple of weeks and waiting for the snow to clear so I can give the car a good look over, he says his son has decided he wants the car, so if I want it how much do I want to pay for it. The finances mean anything much above $0 to stage 0 this car as it needs a fender and rear door and windshield make it un-economic. 4-6 years ago when I did both my last 2 P80 restos they cost $2500+ above the payment price and neither needed those repairs. Also P80's were fairly plentiful in the junkyards as were parts for sale. Now parts are harder to find and junkyards around here have few in any more.

So I suggested he keep the car and his son can do basic repairs to make the car drivable and improve as or when he needs to. My timeline is a lot longer for a turn around so I don't have the time to wait on parts to appear.

Oh, well, plenty other car challenges to deal with!

I have trouble to find GKN/lobro cv boots too.

After some research...i found that Spidan is also a GKN group.

Ordered outer and inner driver's side since outer have cracks and inner is accessible when outer is removed.
