The heart of the question is: which parts are no longer available. In that case, I assume a 25 year old part is better than none at all. Some day I'd like to go through the online stores and list all parts which say they're not available or sell for over $100. Perhaps those are what should be saved from junkyards.

Those 99-00 brake boosters are rare and expensive. I’ve got a spare. Master cylinders seem to last forever on these cars.

If not mentioned earlier, a Xemodex throttle body. I was lucky to find one with the matching software for my S70 once. Always look at the sticker if I find one that looks newish.

All platforms are just some of them ....

Junk Yard "DO NOT LEAVE" Parts — sorted by platform

Compiled from all 8 pages of this thread (77 posts, Oct 2017 – Dec 2025), including matthew1's condensed list of 7 Dec 2025.

Scoping note: this thread lives in the 1992–2000 850/S70/V70/C70 forum, so almost everything named is P80. Only a couple of items are stated to apply elsewhere. Where a poster gave a year, engine or drivetrain qualifier I've kept it — that's usually what makes the part scarce in the first place.

P80 — 850 (1992–97), S70 / V70 / V70 XC (1997–2000), C70 (1997–2004)

Engine sensors & ignition
erikv11's "level 1" spares set, called out specifically for 1998-and-earlier cars
  • Mass air flow sensor (Bosch units preferred)
  • Camshaft position sensor
  • Crankshaft position sensor
  • Throttle position sensor
  • Engine coolant temperature sensor
  • Ignition coil
  • EVAP purge solenoid
  • Barometric pressure sensor
  • Lateral accelerometer (DSTC cars)
  • Vacuum elbows and hoses
Throttle & turbo — year specific
  • ETM / electronic throttle module — grab the later contactless units, build dates from roughly 2013 on, with a different label than the old white or yellow Magneti Marelli ones. Found in the same 1999–2002 cars. Reported around $35–45 at the yard, no programming needed.
  • Xemodex-rebuilt throttle bodies — check the sticker on anything that looks newish. Software has to match the car.
  • 1998 ETMs specifically (mentioned alongside the '95 VVT hubs as rare)
  • Throttle linkage rod, throttle body to linkage, p/n 3507883, 1998 and earlier. Unclips from both ends. No longer available new.
  • Turbo control valves, pre-1999 (used through early '98). NLA. The newer style is reported to work on the older cars.
Fuel system
  • Fuel pump and sending unit assembly — worth keeping if under ~50k miles or under ~5 years old; the factory pump often reaches 150k
  • Fuel level sending units, especially the older sliding-cylinder type
  • Fuel pump relays (pink or white), and relays generally — hit or miss but cheap
  • Fuel pressure regulator if less than ~10 years old
  • AWD fuel tank vent pipes on 1999–2000 tanks — the rubber ends rot and are hard to replicate. Sits on top of the tank, needs the rear subframe dropped, about 2 hours. Only worth it if you're already in there.
Brakes
  • Brake boosters. Pre-1999 no longer available: 9438036 (1993–98) and 9438037 (–1998). 1999–2004 still available but around $400; 1999-on takes 9485170. The 99–00 units were singled out as rare and expensive.
  • Large front brake brackets
  • Rear brake backing plates — the bearing holds them in, but a hacksaw cut lets you bend them off the hub
  • All four wheel speed sensors, with pigtails
Suspension, drivetrain & AWD
  • Lower torque arms / torque rods, especially AWD — almost never found
  • Aluminium control arms (850)
  • Complete CV axles — Volvo originals, especially AWD
  • Angle gears and couplers (AWD), all years, plus the driveshafts. Around $40 at the yard.
  • AWD angle gear vent tube
  • Rear AWD hub bushing, p/n 9157316 — obsolete, both sides
  • RH driveshaft for a 2000 V70 base with the 5-speed auto — only one used OE unit found in North America
  • Rear trailing arms, if not rusted out
  • Manual gearbox and its related parts (M56 / M66 swap material)
  • Low-mileage T5 engine out of a wrecked car
  • Timing belt components with less than ~10k miles on them
  • P80 transmission coolers
  • ipd sway bars
Cooling & HVAC
  • Engine oil cooler thermostat, 1998-and-earlier turbo cars — becoming obsolete
  • A/C compressor hoses, both suction and discharge — no longer available aftermarket, roughly $180 each from Volvo. Harvest any in good condition.
  • New-ish coolant expansion tanks
  • ECC climate control heads
Electrical & audio
  • SC-800 / SC-801 / SC-900 / SC-901 radios
  • All factory amps — trunk and under-seat HU-series
  • Fibre-optic amp-to-radio cables and connectors — obsolete
  • ABS control modules, working ones
  • SRS airbag modules, non-deployed
  • Instrument cluster with trip computer
Lighting & exterior
  • Glass headlights (850 / S70 / V70)
  • Clean x70 headlight reflectors
  • Headlight wiper arms and motors
  • Front corner and turn signal lights
  • S70 1998–2000 rear taillights, all four pieces — only three model years of these, so they're scarce
  • 850 fog lights, fog light grilles, and the small trim rings needed for a fog light retrofit
  • Door mirrors — complete units, or just the clip-in glass
  • Window-to-roof trim
  • Rear wagon wings/spoilers, and R front spoilers — rarely survive in a yard
  • Volvo badges / "jewels"
Interior
  • Third-row seats (wagons), complete with belts and hardware
  • Heated rear seat elements and switches, plus the centre and rear console panels. Factory option only, rare in the 2nd row. 850s are pre-wired for the switches even when not optioned. No factory heated 3rd row ever existed, despite the legend.
  • Rear A/C console vents and panels
  • Seats, or the leather skins if untorn
  • 850 dash pad, if genuinely perfect
  • Leather steering wheels
  • Shift knobs — wood, leather, manual or auto
  • Centre console armrest lids in good shape
  • Retractable cargo cover / shade (wagons)
  • Cargo-area interior panels for wagons — usually cracked, so good ones matter
  • Volvo logo floor mats and cargo mats
Wheels
  • C70: Propus and Comet — almost always worth taking
  • P80 T5: Perfo
  • Alloys generally: yards pull these first because they recoup the cost of the car, so they're often gone before you arrive
Miscellaneous
  • Tailgate / hatch struts that still hold — test them cold, or see if the hatch nearly hits you in the face on the way up
  • Battery hold-down bracket and tray
  • Factory Volvo jack and tool kit, 1998 and later (better than the earlier ones)
  • Other plastic trim and small bits in good condition

P2 — S60 / S80 / V70 / XC70 / XC90 (1999–2016)

The thread names only two P2-relevant items:
  • Tethys wheels — called out as worth grabbing off P2 cars
  • Contactless ETMs overlap here: the 1999–2002 donor range covers the early P2 cars (S80, S60, 2001+ V70) as well as late P80

Any Volvo / not platform scoped

These come from the opening post and were written generically:
  • Mass air flow sensor
  • Volvo-branded centre hub caps
  • Volvo jacks, 1998 and later
  • Fog light grilles
  • Lift gate struts
  • Volvo-branded headlights, turn signals, taillights, fog lights and door lights
  • Cargo shade for wagons
  • Free tools

Part numbers mentioned in the thread
  • 9438036 — brake booster, 1993–1998. NLA.
  • 9438037 — brake booster, –1998. NLA.
  • 9485170 — brake booster, 1999-on. Around $400.
  • 3507883 — throttle linkage rod, P80 –1998. NLA.
  • 9157316 — rear AWD hub bushing. Obsolete.

Not parts, but worth keeping from the thread
  • Don't leave your own toolbox — more than one poster has lost tools
  • Check the junkyard requests thread in Classifieds before you go
  • Wheel pricing varies wildly: roughly $20–43 per wheel plus a $15 aluminium core charge at some yards; you may pay for tire disposal if the tire comes too
  • P80 inventory in yards has been thinning since about 2019
  • FireFox31's rule of thumb: the parts worth saving are the ones no longer available new, or that sell for over $100
