Sounds like an ETM failure with one of the newer cars

I don't know honestly though. I would start trying to take care of your EVAP code, and see if the rest of it goes away. Something about the relationship to outside temperature seems to suggest that it is tied to that system to me. Maybe you fubared the canister valve.

See if you can get us that code if it comes up again and someone might have a better idea. :)

I'll do that. Today when I went to work, the outside temp was in the high 60's low 70's and she never stumbled. Coming home it was in the very high 80's and she was also fine. From what I have noticed so far, it happens when it is below ~68 degrees...
Once I get a little time I will try to get that code and post it back here.

CEL came back and she stumbled once while idling. I'm starting to think it may be the EVAP system. How does the canister attach to the car and what's the best way to take a look at all of the hoses?

Is this the purge valve that I would need to replace?

Sorry to double post, but I want to bump this thread a bit. Does anyone know what to do if the rollover valve in the EVAP system is triggered? Is there a way to reset it, or is a new valve required?

That should be it, but double-check first to make sure that your car doesn't have a square one on the radiator. The 98 model year was split between those and the square one like I have, and knowing Volvo, they probably did something similar with the 850's.
Is there a way to reset it, or is a new valve required?
Not sure. It is triggered by a signal from the ECU. It uses a combination of engine temp and engine speed to control the valve. If it's just not opening/closing like it should, it gets mad and throws a code, and then it probably needs to be replaced.

Are you sure about that roll over valve? According to the documents I've found, it is triggered by gravity...when the car reaches 45 degrees or more from horizontal the valve closes to prevent fuel leakage in case of a full on roll over... I'll take a look at the purge valve and see what funny shape Vovlo made it. ;-)

Edit: Now that I think about it though, do you think the roll over valve would trigger a CEL for a leak in the EVAP system?

Oh, you're talking about the canister shut-off. Usually that one's not a problem. I wouldn't think it would cause any of your symptoms except MAYBE a CEL. I'm sure its encounter with the tree may have shaken it up, but I'd think it would go back to normal once on level ground again.

Sorry, everywhere I looked it said roll over valve as opposed to shut off valve. Yeah, my car went pretty close to 45 when it hit that tree, haha. That's why I was looking into the shut off valve being a possible problem. I just ordered a new purge valve and a new gas cap. I'll let you know what happens when I get them installed; although I haven't had any problems lately aside from the CEL. ::knock on wood::

To close this thread off, I just replaced the purge valve and my gas cap. The new purge valve is a Bosch unit but it was made in China, not Germany... :-( The car hunted around for a second at idle and then calmed down. I'll post back in a couple of days with any updates.

Oh, btw, anybody know how to remove the charcoal canister to inspect it and the hoses running from it.
