Steve, once you expose its innards, if it looks like you'll need stuff, I'm getting ready to harvest bits from my '98 XC before I scrap the carcass. It suffered catastrophic failure of the timing belt tensioner, but was doing well right up until then. Let me know.
Looks like this might be a good day to sit by the fire, though.

Deep chill Coming , 4 days of 0-10F plus wind

Really wanted to get head into shop but it was cold and nasty, struggled but got the deed done

So what was the winning way to separate exhaust/turbo for removal ? Kind of looks like you removed a couple of studs to get it out.
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

Short version

I had to break the down pipe connection first. It's three M8 13mm hex nuts. I had to Dremel off the bottom one.

Once the firm pipe eased sideways towards the passenger side, the turbo rocked back off the manifold studs.

I also noticed I have blown exhaust on 1 and 5 cylinders.

Good work, might be just in the nick of time. Weather down here is gonna get snotty, dunno about up north.
