I see. Different from the other '00 XC setup, too?

Probably this was all in another thread, apologies I am not aware of that one.

Just so we are all on the same page, Blockpartie is correct in that to 2000 MY V70R had a 1 year rear caliper option. It looks like the front calipers we all know and love on our Volvos with a single piston and 2 slider pins. One brake pad is clipped into the piston with 3 spring clips.

This rear brake uses a vented rear rotor which I have shown before, but here we are again:
2000 V70 R vented rear rotor
2000 V70 R vented rear rotor
2000 V70 R rear rotor part #
2000 V70 R rear rotor part #
Rear rotor part # 8617026

I thought I had done the hard part and then came the caliper. Like you all suggested, the re-man'd route was looked into and again as yet I can't find any. Tried Centric who even list a suitable rotor and they were a no.

I am currently in contact with ATE in Germany (OEM) to see if they can identify a generic or other vehicle brand who may use the same caliper, or even have a source for an overhaul kit.

When I look at Vida, it does not even show this part number for the rear calipers as stamped on them:

LH - 9492235 Also numbers 955 2 and 9BS
LH rear caliper part #
LH rear caliper part #
RH - 9492236 Also numbers 956 2 and 9CG
RH rear caliper part #
RH rear caliper part #
I think I read somewhere that the Volvo work around involved back-dating the rear brakes to regular AWD, but again my copy of Vida is of no help here. I will talk to by friends at the dealer and see if they can find out what that is all about. Perhaps the Volvo part numbers were upgraded. I know there was a right up on V70R or Volvospeed for fitting rear rotors from a S60R/V70R but they need to be modified. I'm all for good brakes, but I haven't yet had a Volvo with poor rear brakes. Biggest issue I've had is they don't work hard enough and tend to seize!

If I get any further info from ATE or Volvo I will update. Thanks for the input and debate guys!

Well, The update is as follows:

ATE: Absolutely useless both in Germany and US. US say they don't deal directly with the public, and Germany says to deal with the US! At least Germany guy said that the part was no longer available, but didn't answer the question, if the part was used on any other brand vehicles, and to give me the aTE part number identifier.

Local dealer was a lot more helpful. After some research they said that the part is N(ot) A(vailable), but that Volvo has got a replacement that still uses the same vented rotor. It requires a replacement mounting bracket.

Rotor part numbers are : 8251309 (LH side I believe), and 8251310 (RH side).

Bracket part number is: 8251311 x 2 off.

Tasca is selling the calipers for $205 ea and the brackets for $34 ea.

Rotor part number is: 8617026

Sorry, but forgot to get the brake pad part number.

Hope this helps. Not sure what they will do for the core deposit if we try to exchange the old parts!

Neil what i would do is Identify the brake pad in a Bendix catalogue then use the DB number to see if other cars share the pad by searching for the DB number online. For example Mazda use the same pad on the 6 as Volvo uses on the V70 and S60. That could help you track down a similar caliper.

Thanks Mike for the suggestion. I did look up the Bendix web-site, and at least it is helpful in giving the Bendix part number when entering the Volvo part number.

That part number is listed for the pads for various Volvos, the same as on the Volvo brake pad pack. None of those use the same caliper though.

I had a quick look at the Vida info for the replacement caliper, which is used on all AWD S/V70 and XC it would appear for 199 and 2000 MY. If that is the case there will also be other parts needed like a backing plate and the slider bolts and the 2 mounting bolts for the caliper to slider.

Make sure to check with the dealer to ensure you have all the parts you need for the update!!

Try these guys:

http://www.brakeandsteering.com/

This is a small shop in London, Ontario that rebuilds calipers/steering racks, etc. I used them a couple times a decade ago when I used to live there. They might be able to help with cross-referencing, or they may be able to rebuild your calipers for you.

Good luck!

Many thanks John! I used your info with my local parts store here in Calgary, and they came up with another option for refurb's units from a Canadian company called Ultram, Their part numbers are: RFC22-9337L or R. They are $100 ea + $100 ea core charge (and that is CDN$ or $80 US). I plan to go and order a pair tomorrow and confirm they are correct and post back. At that price, as I am having to pull them anyway, it makes sense to replace them. If these don't work out, then I'll look into the US options from Centric, but that adds about $40 shipping each onto the part price, plus the return shipping for the cores. I will need to check how that would stack up against dealer prices for the replacement parts.
