Problem with CEL on my 1998 S70 GLT

Post by wrybread »

In my part of California I need to smog my 1998 S70 GLT every 2 years, and I'm now a few months late, oops, so it's now an emergency. My CEL is coming on for two faults:

P0410 - Powertrain - Secondary Air Injection System

P0455 - Powertrain - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross leak, check fuel cap, piping, etc)

I don't think the P0410 Secondary Air Injection System will be an issue since it takes a few hundred miles before it trips the CEL, so I can reset and pass smog. And there's a mod by Robert DIY to bypass the pump here:

But the other fault is more serious since it fails quickly so I can't smog with it. I had the leak 2 years ago too but it was throwing the "small leak" error, and I could reset my CEL and pass smog before it failed. But now it's failing quickly.

My friend did a smoke test (gizmo that injects smoke at the gas cap), but we don't see any smoke leaking.

I don't imagine anyone has any ideas?

Edit to add: already swapped the gas cap with a new Volvo cap, and I swapped the evap valve two years ago.

Also, I don't mind kludges that get me through the smog test, I don't really care if my CEL is on, I'm used to it by now, ha. I'm reading about the "drive cycle", and wondering if there's a way to pass smog before the drive cycle completes, so it doesn't have time to throw the error? Or any other kludges involving gaming the drive cycle?

Update: we checked codes with a fancier OBD2 reader and got the following codes: 611, 612, 446, 442.

Also, there's never any gasoline smell.

In CA you have to have all the smog equipment tagged to the VIN of record so be aware of the bypass tricks.

You can have only two monitors not ready to pass smog so clearing the codes just before check won’t work. You will have to complete cat and oxs tests to get through

"You will have to complete cat and oxs tests to get through"

Is there some clever trick to get cat and oxs test to complete before evap?

Edited to add: I'm reading some posts that say running the AC may interrupt the evap test, as will having a full tank for gas. Any thoughts on that?

Y,ou generally want AC off, and between 1/4-3/4 tank of gas. Stay under 60 mph too, no WOT

.
The shop in NC told us to clear the EVAP code on our 05 GS430 and fill the tank. Below 3/4 and above 1/4 tank of fuel is when the EVAP test is done. We are allowed one incomplete Readiness so we passed.

When I was in CA our 98 S70 T5 with 240K miles had issues with Readiness also. Refer to Appendix J and see if your Test Station can do an exemption on their machine. It's been awhile.

Be sure to change your oil to something thicker as in 15W40, Rotella T6 will work. As for fuel use Chevron Premium or whatever the highest is called. Add two bottles of the Chevron Techron also or Swepco 503. If you are in the East Bay Antonio from Independent Volvo in Walnut Creek should carry it or try your local Porsche Indy shop.

That's how I passed before, the evap test hadn't finished, which was acceptable since the others passed. So I'm wondering if I can just keep AC on and tank full until the others pass.

I'm not familiar with why the AC would affect the test? Maybe during the test as the idle may need to be higher and more fuel is used during idle? Wouldn't hurt to try. I think clean oil and higher Octane will be very beneficial. Have always used either Chevron or Costco. Chevron being the superior fuel. Been doing so since the early 80's if my memory serves me right, with the 83 VW GTI purchased new.

From what I'm reading the evap test gets reset if you run the AC. Or if you exceed 60mph, or if there's more than 3/4 or less than 1/4 tank of gas, if you do some amount of full throttle. I'm going to try doing all of the above to prolong the evap test since as you say I can have one test be incomplete and still pass smog, as long as it doesn't trigger the CEL. Unconfirmed now, curious if anyone has thoughts on it.

Full throttle (more than 3/4)
AC on
Exceed 60 mph
Less than 1/4 or more than 3/4 tank gas

But I'm not sure if that would prevent the O2 sensor test from running too.
