When I was tempted to the junkyard last week by 2 x 2000 V70R's in one yard, I saw one of them had nice what looked like fairly recent axles, and even though some idiot had dropped the subframe without disconnecting the suspension and managed to pull the inner CV boot off, I decided to take them as is as this yard was only charging $60 CDN ($45 US) for a pair of axles!
Glad I did as I had some time just to look at them and had them on the bench with the other 2 and discovered they are both different!!
Part numbers are one give away, but also I discovered the ends are different, and the long RH axle, the support bearing is in a different position and the section that goes into the automatic transmission. I'm thinking the slight length differences may be down to the V70XC sitting higher than the regular AWD cars? The other shoe dropped as I realized that the V70XC had a 4 speed auto for the P80 run, but the 2000 V70R has a 5 speed auto. I think the 2000 V/S70 base models were the only other model fitted with the 5 speed auto!
Pictures:
Sorry, I see 2 of the pictures are flipped. I realized that the labels were the opposite direction before I took the pictures so turned the camera 180 to take the pictures. When they uploaded to my photo file they were upside down so I flipped them in my photo file before uploading to MVS. For some reason it flipped them upside down again??
So I reckon I now have a good pair of 2000 V70 XC axles, which may fit a 99 as well as they used the same transmission, a 98 would need some checking!
These are older photos before they had a coat of automotive rubber protectant. They now look even cleaner and shiny!
Now I just have to clean my 'new' R axles and fit a new CV boot (naturally I think I may have one on a shelf.......!
Neil.
