Finally had time to sit down and start writing this up as promised!
Tools and equipment for repairs:
Below you can see there looks like a lot of tools and materials, and there are. Some you could manage without. I use all of this stuff as having done this several times some parts of the repair can be speeded up using all this stuff.
- Repair tools and products
I have included a picture of the stainless steel 304 pipe hanging strap I used (10ft). However, they gave changed the part number, but it is the same stuff:

I have shown 3 cleaning chemicals. You can use any of these and cotton buds or cloth to clean any areas where glue is being used. They can be used to remove and grease and also texture the surface (fine sandpaper can also be used). Surgical Spirit is IPA @ 99% (Isopropanol), Goof Off, or Acetone. Careful with acetone as it is pretty aggressive on the dash plastic.
Regular scissors, some kitchen foil for mixing the plastic 2 part JB Weld glue (Note, if you are particular this comes in Black or Tan – No not Guiness!!). Regular Sellotape to hold stuff together (it un-peels easily even with glue on it). You can use masking tape but it may not adhere as well to plastics.
- Metal files
The metal files I used. Mostly I used the round back and round files on the slots for the bolts
- Drill bit for bolt hole
The drill bit I used was a 23/64" but a 3/8" or 9mm for the bolt holes would work just as well.
- Strapping used
Finally the stainless steel 304 pipe hanger. I got this from Grainger. Since I bought this for some reason they have changed the part number to : WWG4NCD2 – link is above if it works. You can also see a ‘set of 4 bent straps already made for a dash I didn’t eventually keep as it had too many broken tabs elsewhere. Finally there are 2 short straight lengths which are my templates for cutting and prepping more!
- Felt one sided tape
This is one sided adhesive tape. I got this from Amazon (make sure you use Matthews link!!). It is kind of felt like on one side and is similar to the tape used on the dash to prevent plastic on metal rubbing and squeaks. There are a few pieces used, but specifically on this repair you can either re-use if you can remove the originals, or this was fairly cheap. It goes around the 4 mounts as can be seen later.
- JB Weld Plastic in Black
I used the Black JB weld for obvious reasons even though it will never bee seen!
- General supplies
General supplies used for repairs
- Self threading sheet screws
½” self tapping/cutting sheet screws with Phillips/cross heads. I got these again on Amazon fairly cheaply, but they came in ½” and ¾” (or 5/8” can’t recall). Approx. 50 in each pack and in this case came in black, but there was a silver option also.
Finally, I used a cordless drill on slow drilling speed and a Phillips or cross head DeWalt bit. Any brand can be used. Reason for using the drill is the slow speed so it does not crack the plastic when repairing.
I had no problem installing this way, but if you find the plastic brittle, you may want to drill a small pilot hole first.
