The Resurrection of Ekaterina 1999 S70 AWD silver

Post by abscate »

Well , with Grunhilde winding down to near completion, I turned my attention to the S70

I decided if I could make progress in the big step of dropping the rear axle to fix the fuel leak, I would dive in as the last big Volvo project before winter drives us inside in December / January.

My welding buddy loaned me “ the Beast” ....a totally awesome 1500 ft lb cordless

It did not disappoint.

15 seconds of impact

That green monster sells for $775 new. It has more than 3x the torque if my corded one.

I know the story. When I bought a NEW viscous coupler for Whitey (98' V70XC) a few years ago, the dealer in PA told me he may have just found the last one for me. That one now resides in VT.

You have to be on the brink of insanity to take on a P80 AWD.

I agree with the buying of an AWD as they are getting so hard to find new parts for for the rear of the car. Front end is not so bad.

I have been in contact with abscate on this and cheering him on from the sidelines. Now he has got by the worst part of getting the sub-frame bolts out (a method I had available when I did it) then hopefully he can make the suitable repairs to fix the fuel leak. The car is otherwise a nice car so I am hoping he can get it fixed, or maybe discover if an AWD can accept the FWD rear suspension.

I recall several years ago someone in Norway (?) trying to convert I think a FWD to AWD if I remember correctly. It would certainly be a great boon to all us AWD owners if that is possible as it may mean we can otherwise save otherwise good AWD cars.

Good luck our friend and may the Volvo Gods continue to smile on you (as opposed to laughing their asses off for tackling an AWD!).

Neil.
