The Resurrection of Ekaterina...Redux

Post by YV1LW »

@abscate

After having read with EXTREME interest the process of dropping the rear subframe and as the owner of 98 V70R with a fuel leak (tank?? line(s)??), I'm trying to gird my loins for the PITA this process will be. If I can get the vehicle 20" off the floor it will be a minor miracle.

Commencing the project is a list of all rear subframe components. In your work, did you replace #2, bushing, p/n 9140469? If this part was replaced, was it nearly impossible or not too bad. VIDA shows a special air driven tool to remove and replace the bushing. I've been thinking a piece of threaded rod, large washers and an appropriate piece of iron pipe could suffice.

Page 3; 5 of 7 carrier bolts. Next time, would you START with the hardest bolts first? The front (2) M12 (#'s 7 & 8) proved to be most egregious. The #s 7 & 8 do not refer to any of the numbering in either diagram, correct? Would these be the most forward of the subframe bolts? How could I find these and realize I'm looking at the same troublemakers?

Page 4; "identified the 7th bolt (not 8th?) as the bolt holding the front VC housing bush...". In the diagram following that discovery, the problem bolt is identified as #13. Correct? To wit "Flange bolt 985061" a M12 x 80mm. I would assume it was a 1.50 pitch. Grade 8.8?

In attempting to remove any "problem bolts", did you ever try tightening the bolt a bit and then proceeding to attempt removal?

@Scot850 in the topic "P80 AWD fuel pipes for 99-00" reviews the fuel lines. I did not see a comment on the the size of these lines. Was the OD 3/16" aka 4.75mm or larger?

Page 6; @850 LPT notes 8mm as size for fuel line. Is that the correct size?

On page 7 you copied the parts diagram with several parts circled in red. The circled parts are the following;
Flange Nut 985870
Eccentric Bolt 986931
Eccentric Washer 31201493
Did you replace the bushing noted as #27?? Did you need to order the eccentric washer from Skandix?

Final question; would you do this again?

Thanks for all replies and encouragement!!

You definitely need heat and impact on the subframe bolts on a Northern exposure car. I think in KY I would heat them with propane and try a 2 foot cheater on a good six point socket first. It’s bolt to frame bonding that is the enemy but if it’s been kept dry that shouldn’t be bad.

I’ll try post up a picture of what I replaced from thst thread in a day or two

Total of 7 carrier bolts

2 sides. 3 on each side

1 bolt on the torque tube , middle of car

Link to thread with diagrams. All my bushings were good except for the stay arms which are still available new at about $100 each. Be really careful with that eccentric bolt hardware on back , those bolts are really special and are hard to find.

He is still the therapy and still not completed all repairs. Be gentle.........!

I have done this with a car possibly worse than what abscate worked with and no access to a hoist. With the benefit of doing this before and learnings from him, I would do this again, but only with a gun to my head! Seriously. Getting the bolts out was the hardest part and dealing with NLA parts.

It’s a nice ride, I’m really happy how it turned out. I have to polish off the rear brakes and pop the driveshaft back on.

It’s my 4th recovery Volvo, and I think I have 35 hours in it. Completely uneconomical financially but three young ladies in early careers with no car payments might disagree.

The fuel system used CuNiform 8mm ? And Gates barricade fuel injection hose ( important) cutting out bad metal line and bridging to new line. I will do the final bridge connection to the engine with a union under the car eventually.

All of the Evap hoses except the canister are NLA so you have to inspect/ reuse or build up ftom fat fuel line. I did both. There are some fat hoses with tapers that can be built up with size adapters.

Well, i got the car up on ramps & it promptly snowed 5”. And went back to low teens. Then i discovered I’d left the rear hatch slightly ajar & killed the battery.

When driving the rarely driven R, dropped a wheel in a gianormous pothole & that wheel is now damaged.

Would not have any luck if it wasn’t for bad luck.

Still trying to screw up my courage since the wx has broken towards spring, but it’s looking like mower riding time is coming early this year.

I’ve taken “ the Kat” out twice for 15 mile runs at 55 mph. She is returning 28 mpg, cruises at 2000 rpm

Power off the line is crazy good. She is in FWD MODE with no driveshaft and a 3 inch? Down pipe and Bosal cat
