If you have a Volvo 850 manual trans and want to replace the shift knob, I recommend U remove the center console for EZ access and to prevent damage to your center console during the shift knob removal.
1) Remove screws and other misc connections connecting the center console.
2) Release shift lever boot from center console by disengaging boot clips at its bottom rear. To do this, remove parking brake cover panel; insert your finger into cover panel opening to push the boot clips up. Be careful in pushing these plastic boot clips up, they tend to break easily.
3) Now twist the shift lever boot onto its side and push it down the center console opening. This will free your center console for removal once you've got all other screws and connections disconnected.
You know you will have to destroy the original shift knob right? Just wanted to let U know that just in case U had plans to reuse it again. Not going to happen...
Use a knife or side cutters to remove the original shift knob hard form. If your replacement shift knob doesn't come with a plasic trim ring, I suggest be careful not to destroy the plastic trim ring of the original shift knob. Recommend U saw it off from the base of the knob so U can use it again with your new one.
