Throttle Body Cleaning Procedure

Post by jsturt »

2004 V 70 100,000 miles non-turbo. I continue to experience a engine stalling problem when the car slows to a stop. It seems to be due to a low and irratic idle speed. It has been recommended to clean the throttle body. I have several questions regarding this process:
1. Can the throttle body be cleaned in place, or do I need to remove?
2. What is the best cleaning solution to use?
3. Is the main purpose to remove grime from the interior surfaces, or are there additional areas to concentrate on?

Any suggestions or precautions will be appreciated.

ThANKS!

Volvo recommends taking it out of the car to clean- I'm not sure if that's really necessary but don't know- I know it would be hard to get to otherwise, but here are instructions for 1. taking it out and 2. cleaning:

You can use TB cleaner that you buy at a parts store rather than the special (expensive) Volvo cleaning fluid.

Thanks for the information. I cleaned the throttle body in place using standard tb cleaner. The results were dramatic! The idle speed increased and was much smoother. The stalling problem has gone away.

Because it sits on its side, removing it first is HIGHLY recommended!

hi,
first, let me introduce myself. My name is florian, i am 25 years old and i live in bonn, germany.

since one week, my v70 II makes some trouble.
the engine die down, without any indication, i guess thats a problem with the throttle valve (unfortunately its the magnetti marelli one).
So i want to clean the valve and i have found this forum and this manual.

so much for that, my questions:
1) did anyone made experience with a softwareupdate by the retailer?
as solution without TB replacement (in germany, the replacement will cost about 1000€, unmentioned that i want to avoid that)
2) if i deassamble my TB, clean and reassamble it, must i performe an software update? i guess not!

many thanks,
flo

Guten Tag, Welches jahr ist seines Volvo? Wieviel kilometers an seines auto? In the US the software upgrade was called "campaign #155". The ETB on my 1999 V70 wasn't bad so there was no change. A few people on this website and on www{dot}brickboard{dot}com said it helped a little. It's OK to remove and clean your ETB. The warranty on these ETBs was extended to 10 years/200,000 miles in the US. See if this extension applies in Germany. Kira (Georgundkira Ha-Ha)

hi,
thanks for your answer.
my v70 is build in 2001, the odometer shows 145.000km.
unfortunately, there isn't such a warranty like usa and no re-call service for this part.
but i will contact the volvo retailer to clearify the situation.

many thanks.

i hope my english is not so bad.

regards flo
