'87 740 Turbo Wagon Won't Start

Post by hernison »

I have a 1987 740 Turbo Wagon with 185,000 miles. It was running fine until one day we drove for a few miles and when we went to start it up again it would turn over but not start. This was a sudden occurence and after we let it sit for a while it was fine. That was about a month ago, now it turns over but we cannot get it to start at all.

I don't know if this is a related issue, but when it is cold the gauges don't work and the battery doesn't charge until the car has warmed up for a while.

The list of reasons for a "no start" is very long, but start with the basics.

Spark, simply pull a plug wire and crank the engine over to see if you have spark, if you do move on, if no spark you know where to start looking.

Fuel, this is harder to determine on an EFI vericle but you should be able to hear the fuel pump running while cranking. Ideally a fuel pressure test should be done but special equipment is needed for this test. As a rough (very rough) idea you should be able to "feel" the fuel lines swelling slightly and getting rigid from the fuel pressure when cranking.

Generally looking over the engine to see if you notice any loose connectors or vacuum lines not connected

Good luck
