2001 S60 T5 ECU Failure

Post by Switch »

Hi all,

I hope that you can help me here! I bought a S60 T5 a few months back and it's been failure after failure with it  . First the Throttle Position Sensor went and was replaced, then it kept going into Limp Mode and then it struggled to start/ spark, then the boot fusebox 'blew'. Now the Volvo dealer says that the ECU is blown. I got a second-hand ECU and Volvo said it was faulty. Now I got another one from a different dealer and Volvo say that the ECU isn't 'blocked' and they can't clear the ECU and relaod/ set it for my car. Volvo want to charge me a RIDICULOUS fee!!

They are reloading it through the car and not using a jig. They swear that there is no other way to load it other than through the car. Please help!!! I'm regretting moving to this from an Audi (let the flaming begin) and
I'm sure that they (Volvo) are just missing something...

Thanks,

You can't buy a used ECU and install it on a P2 car
Once it's flashed, that's it, it will work in that car only.

If your ECU is truly bad (very unlikely), you need to buy a NEW ONE and have it loaded into your car by a Volvo dealer.

Did they try to reload your CEM, more likely that's the cause.
You seem to be at another clueless dealer

(What's a JIG)??????
Volvo, like many Euro cars, indeed have their issues, but in your case it's amplified by a VERY incompetent dealer

Hi JRL,

Thanks for the speedy reply! I'll ask them to check the Central Electronic Module to see if there's a problem with it. I hope it's something simple. They've also been charging for each failed reload... They're the ones who said that I will be able to use a second-hand ECU to save on costs. Unfortunately they wanted to charge me R12000 (+/- $1750) before tax for the new part excluding labour and software.

A jig is a docking station that you put the ECU in and connect it straight to the computer/ laptop without the car. I guess it's a slang term here.

Thanks again! I'll see what they say.

OK, to just highlight the incompetence of the Volvo dealer: They called me a few minutes ago and told me that the old ECU is working. This is after I called them and told them I'm taking to an ECU tuner that told me that he should be able to get it working... It looks like they were just trying to rip me off and make a quick buck :x Going to collect it in a few hours.
