Re: Smoke from dipstick, changed PVC and cleaned PTC
I cleaned my PTC again last night. There was signs that the system was trying hard to work with oil seeping through the connections. With the engine running, I popped of the top hose and didn't see any smoke. I bumped the throttle and the dipstick would draw in air on the return to idle. I poured some seafoam down the pipe coming up for the valve cover. I did this with the engine fully warmed with the engine off, and let it sit for a bit. I used less that a 1/3 of a bottle. I checked the dipstick, and it wasn't smoking. I think it cleared out the blockage in the separator. I cleaned the block ports when I replaced the separator but may have not done it well enough. They really didn't look bad, and the hoses were brittle, so I thought that to be the original problem. I will continue to check it, and report back. I am hoping this will be the fix for me.

My son's car is a 98 s70 and his rear main is already blown due to the pcv being clogged and leaked real bad at the rear main seal. I told him to leave the dipstick up about 1/4 inch so the pressure can escape. Don't think its right but it doesn't leak as bad at the rear main seal. Temporary fix until i can dig into it and repair. This might work for you until you can figure it out so you don't blow any seals..

I am now without a smoking dipstick, thanks to seafoam. I will plan to use it every other oil change to clean the oil separator. Pouring some down the hose coming from the valve cover definitely fixed my issue. Results came very quickly. Just don't run to long with it in the oil.
Glad to hear that it worked. Did you pour the Seafoam down the PCV hose that goes from the valve cover to the PCV oil trap? Or did you add it to the engine oil? If you put it down the PCV hose than why would you have to change the oil? Also how long did you let the Seafoam sit? Thankswjhandy850 wrote:I am now without a smoking dipstick, thanks to seafoam. I recall reading somewhere, I can't think of where at the moment, that someone scraped the pcv system and came up with a simpler, easier to service alternative for our 850s that still performed the "venting" function. I can't remember what if any impact it had on tripping a CEL or if there were any other negative consequences. It may have been, cough, cough, for an OFF ROAD USE ONLY,
. Or perhaps the exhaust fumes have gotten to me......!

Yes I used a little funnel, and poured a bit less than a third of a bottle down the hose that connects to the valve cover. I used the junction that the hose has at the 90 degree turn. I did this with a fully warmed engine. I let it sit for about 20 mins before I drove it. I has cleared blockage that caused my smoking dipstick, and various other little oil leaks that I was starting to get. Pressure is now within working order. I had just gotten my head replaced after blowing it about 2 months ago. I am now thinking that this was the main reason my head gasket blew. I have read advisement not to run seafoam in the oil for to long.
Thanks for the response. I just did the same procedure a couple hours ago and the smoke coming from the dipstick looks like it definitely has become less noticeable. I will check it again in the morning. By the way, I would not recommend running Seafoam in your crankcase(oil) at all. I am currently a student at a local automotive service tech institute and have personally witnessed what can happen if you leave Seafoam in your oil for too long. And by too long I mean over 30 minutes. Thanks againwjhandy850 wrote:Yes I used a little funnel, and poured a bit less than a third of a bottle down the hose that connects to the valve cover. What can Seafoam do in the oil? I have run it in my oil a few times before. I did the prescribed 1/3 gas tank,1/3 intake,1/3 oil proceedure many times on my 850s. I never ran the seafoam in the oil longer than 500 miles as suggested. I have a 96 850 with a "burned valve" in my garage as well as the 97. The 97 is about a month in on a head replacement. I never used it on my 95 that was at 289,000 when it was t-boned. That was the best one so far as issues.

i still was getting smoke from the disptick after a compleate pcv and oil trap job, and this after a few hundred miles...before seafoaming or trying anything else i decided to make the pcv nipple compleately air tight, i used a bit of gasket maker to seal the nipple around the oring ....
up to now no smoke....ill cross my fingers and hope its all that was needed
ill keep you posted
cheers !
