2001 V70XC Purchase Advice

Post by jakesv »

Hello; I am a new member here and currently own an 03 V70. I like the car but my wife likes it more, so ...
Anyways, I am looking at an 01 XC70 with 95K for mileage. 1 owner with most if not all maint. stamps in the service book including one this past week. White lable ETM. No apparent issues, yet. Matching tires, good shifting and pretty average condition for the age. I can not get past this one issue though. While looking in the engine bay, i noticed what appeared to be plastic shavings laying on top of the transmission. I traced them to the plastic wire loom wrap on top of the engine. It was brittle and broke apart quite easily to the touch. I had never seen this. I checked my own car and found it to be "normal", not brittle. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it normal, or has something heated up the loom to cause this? The rest of the engine bay looked OK, not show room clean, but not filthy either. Thanks for any input.

That's the least of any problems, these become brittle and break off quite often, wrap with electrical tape and it's done.
My feelings on 01s is do not buy one, but that choice is up to you

01 is the first year that Volvos were "influenced" by Ford. That year across all Volvo models is bad so buying an 01 Volvo is a gamble...

Ford had absolutely NOTHING to do with the P2s, they were designed BEFORE Ford bought Volvo.
The 1st car that's FORD is the 04-1/2 S40 and V50

OK, thanks for that input. Is there any agreement on what years I should be looking at for a used XC? Mileage is not a huge issue as I will put less than 4K a year on it. I am looking more at longevity of the body and mechanicals.

If you want to bury your head in the sand, play Ostrich and not listen to people who know what is and what isn't with Volvo, that's totally up to you.

The P2 cars were already driving around in prototype form when Ford bought Volvo in 1999.

They started designing them around 1997 or so. It takes Volvo YEARS to design and bring out a new car
These came out in final delivery form in Europe very EARLY 2000, and in the US they were here in MAY 2000.
(I bought mine in June 2000!)
It takes over a year just to certify a car for the US, so do the math.

Like I said you can think what you want. I've heard otherwise. Don't get so excited.

However, the only way I would be playing ostrich is if I just blindly listened to you. For all I know you're a 16 yro punk on your parents computer. Why should I believe that you know squat about the inner politics of Volvo and Ford. Clearly you have some issue with people disagreeing with you.

If it matters THAT much to you that others listen to you blindly then perhaps you should offer up some sort of reference for your "facts." I'm sure you went to school. When you write a paper you are asked to cite your sources. If you are so sure that you are correct then perhaps next time you should offer some sources so that other members on this forum have a reason to listen to your bantering.
