US V70 t5/2001/transmission out after 22k?!

Post by K9 Nanny »

:shock:
Anyone else had an issue like this? I replaced the original transmission @ 103k one year and two months ago. The dealer said that the new trannys had been improved upon, so I went with a brand new vs. a re-built-thinking to avoid going through this again.
Two weeks ago I had some maintenance done on it, and the fluid was full and clean. Car ran great. All was well.
Then no warning, no service trans. light, nothing. It went out. This is 2 months after Volvo's 1 year warranty expired.
Anyone have any thoughts? How could this happen?

What did you have done?
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

What does "it just went out" mean exactly?

Cheers,

I had basic service done, ie; fluids, brakes.
"It just went out", meaning. The car was fine. I parked, grabbed a cup of coffee, got in, started it and put it in R, and it shuddered and locked up. Then went into gear. I drove it, it kept locking up. The needle on the gauge on the dash (engine RPM) would fly up to 4, then back to 2 as the car resumed regular gear.
I limped it to the nearest mechanic that people had recommended (mine retired). The diagnostic read code 0099. He said that it was an internal chip for the transmission, and that Volvo should take care of it, since the transmission was so new. The Volvo dealer is now saying that it's the entire transmission.

Yeah, that's a situation where it is time to return to the dealer that put the tranny in and go after them. Although you are out of warranty, perhaps you can get a "good will" fix or adjustment. The fact that you only got 55K out of a new tranny should count for something. If you do a search on that code there are a number of hits including ones mentioning TSBs on the AW55 tranny. Might be an answer there somewhere in regard to how the dealer is to resolve the situation.

Good luck,

Bill

Doh! My typing skills need a bit of work. Of course, if you turn 55 around it does kind of look like 22.
