cranks but will not start

Post by satch77 »

1999 Volvo V70 XC Wagon 2.4 turbo charged, car was running, slowed up to make turn and car shut off, engine cranks over, started back up, but then immediately shut off, since then crank is good, but will not start and keeps a code P0342, Camsensor. Was advised to replace sensor, replaced sensor with new geniune Volvo camsensor, and still having same problem and same code. Initial code was POO14 along with code P0342, but since sensor installed and engine cranking, only P0342 shows up.

Car has 145K, had timing replace at 105K

Please advise....HELP, have to get son back to college this weekend!

Start with the basics first: are you out of fuel? If you run low often you run the risk of clogging the fuel filter or ruining the pump. Do you have fuel pressure at the rail?

Do you have spark? Are the plugs ok?

I checked fuel press. it is 60psi when ignition is turned to on. when i am cranking engine over it stays at 60psi steady. I have good spark on all 5 spark plugs when cranking engine over. I checked all 5 coils at the same time cranking, all were showing good spark. when i was about to check compression i noticed piston had lots of gas on top of it. i found compression at about 50psi.on about all cylinders.i was thinking maybe cyldrs.got washed down with gas from extended cranking.cleaned out with air press.then put a little oil in cyldrs.then checked compression again went to almost 100-110.i guess i will let sit overnight and try again tomorrow. maybe i will have better luck. appreciate anyones help on this.

Your compression should be much higher than that. You likely drowned the cylinders in gas & it can't get up enough compression to start.

ok,this morning i checked compression and it is between 100-125 on all 5.cranks over good, but still won`t come to life.now it seems to be too much fuel in cylinders, all wet.still getting p0342 code during cranking. any suggestions what to try or look for next? i just do not want to keep cranking and burn up starter or wash cylds. down again.

P0342 is a camshaft position sensor error. The car won't run without the camshaft position signal.

it is a pricey part so check the connector first to make sure it isn't corroded.

I don't know about your year, but on my 95 I had a faulty TCP and it will throw a Camshaft position sensor code sometimes. Plus a TCP will keep it form starting. It's a cheaper fix than the CPS...by about $300. try that first

On my 2001 T5a I had a very similar situation. Turned out to be the pressure side of the turbo hose to the inter cooler had come off down between the engine and the intercooler (where it was difficule to see). I never did get codes, as I finally saw the problem, used my tool kit to reattach the hose and was on my way. My root cause was I had done a spark plug change and had loosened this connection in the process. I had reattached the hose, but had forgotten to tighten the hose clamp. So look for breaks in the system!

Please let the group know what the issue was once you find it. It is how we all learn!

temperature coefficient probe. (I may be mistaken on the nomeclature but thats pretty close.) it is in your thermostat housing. It's a small sensor just beneath the neck on the housing. They run about $20 at the local parts house. I doubt if that's a part that absolutely NEEDS to come from Volvo. I changed mine right in the parking lot with one wrench. My car was also throwing the cam position sensor code because of this and it started right up after I changed it. I cleared the codes and it never came back.
