Mysterious Timing Belt Parts '98 V70 GLT

Post by Journeyman »

Can somebody help me identify these parts? What the hell kind of tensioner is that? It appears that the hydraulic tensioner is missing and that the pulley is some strange part.

I have all new parts ready to go. Should I just cut the belt and put in the new parts? I don't know who the guy is who worked on this car, but he really sucked.

Thats just a regular late style spring loaded tensioner. You have a 98 and they switched from hydraulic to spring tensioner that year. The newer tensioner makes the job a lot easier.

DO NOT CUT THE TIMING BELT!
Turn the engine by hand until the cams are aligned with the marking on the cam cover. Take some whiteout, draw a single line across the T bet at each pulley (intake, exhaust, crank) and continue the line across the face of the pulley. Once you have the 3 lines on the belt and pulleys, remove the belt. Count the number of teeth between the whiteout lines on the old belt and transfer the markings onto the new belt. Check and re check your count and side by side several times. Once you're absolutely sure that the markings have been transferred correctly, install the new belt with the lines lined up with the markings you made on the pulleys. This will take all the guess work out of changing the timing belt.

Scroll down to the bottom.

Yes I realize that now. Thanks.

I was unaware that the change in tensioner occurred midway through the '98 model year. A word to the wise for those ordering from eeuroparts.com, they are not very clear in their parts listings about this!
