The worse scenario the rear main seal leaks. The flame trap and related oil seperator are what get clogged. If your car is a turbo you do not have a flame trap but still have the related hose and seperator. The hose exits from behind the intake manifold and enters the intake system between the air fiter and the throttle plate.

In addition to the above, excess crankcase pressure can cause increased oil consumption. Also, combustion gasses in the crankase can appear as smoke when you remove the oil filler cap after a hard run.

Is it possible to clean or replace the oil trap/separator? Mine is not clogged but I'd like to keep it that way :)

The separator is under the intake manifold, so would require removal of that and the fuel rail.

The best way to keep it clean is to use good quality oil and change it frequently. Low quality dino oils contain a lot of paraffin that leads to the sludge build up that eventually clogs the separator.

Synthetic oil changed about every 5k on a turbo or 7.5k on an NA will keep your engine clean, and over a few years time, will even clean up a dirty one.
