1991 - 740 Turbo Fuel Level Sensor

Post by sjh »

I have not had any luck searching the forums for an answer to my question. If someone knows of an existing thread, i would appreciate a link to it.

My problem is on a 1991 740 turbo, the fuel display in the dash has been on the fritz for about 3 years now. I have just put up with for the time being but I wondered if anyone can help me by explaining where the fuel level sensor is located and how you would gain access to it. Of course I am hoping that I will be able to access it myself and replace it with a cheap new one or a used sensor.

Thank you to anyone who can help me with this!

Steve

It is attached to the in-tank fuel pump. You can access this through an inspection hole in the floor of the luggage compartment.

Lift up the carpet and you will see the hatch.
Remove it to expose the top of the tank.
Disconnect the leads.
Remove the large knurled retaining ring. You may have to tap this gently with a block of wood and a small hammer to get it to move.
Remove the combined sender unit and pump.

If you do decide to do this disconnect the battery negative lead first to avoid causing any sparks whilst the top of the tank is open. Be sure to have your radio code.

Great! Thanks Bill. I will try this in the next few days, if I can, and let you know if I get it to work out.

Thanks!

As an afterthought, before hauling the sender out check the connectors for good contact and no corrosion.

Bill,

I opened the hatch and looked under the carpet under the third seat. I did not find any kind of an access panel or anything, all I saw was a couple of grommets over some inspection holes. Is the 'hatch' tricky to find or should it be obviously apparent?

Thanks again for your help. When I do get in there I will definitely check the wires first, I just had that same issue with my speedo sensor (the wires had broken at the sensor).

Is this an estate (wagon)? If so the fuel tank is mounted on the right side under the lift up lid. You should be able to see the access hatch when you remove the lid.
