V70 2002 electrical

Post by disneyman »

I recently replaced the battery, and found some issues a couple weeks later that include the following:
Alarm sound is almost silent
rear door locks and trunk no longer unlock or lock
back up lights no longer turn on in reverse
sun roof no longer opens or closes
gas gauge no longer works
rear wiper does not work
gas door does not engage
now sometimes these items will work, and other times they will not. most recently these items do not work at all.
My repair guy feels it is a relay as i have check EVERY fuse in the car (front, side, back, etc...)
I have an appointment with the dealer, but he wants $600+ just to look at all the problems again. Any advice would be wonderful.

Did you have your key in position II (right before ignition) while connecting back the battery? If not, this could be your issue. Disconnect the battery again and put your key in II when you reconnect. This and of itself may solve your problems. Good luck!

I guess my excitement got the best of me. The problems are back, and nothing is working again. Everything worked fine last night, now today is all the same. Any thing else to try?

Key in door lock...lock and unlock several times- other than that you might have some type of electrical glitch from your first disconnect/connect without key in position II. Good luck- hope things restore themselves...hate paying the dealer anything.

All the problems you mention except the sunroof and siren are related to the REM. As MIJ mentioned, the sunroof problem needs a reset by unlocking and locking your doors several times with your key. Not sure about the siren, I think is may just be going bad and is not directly related to other problems listed.

For all the other problems mentioned I suspect the problem is either a power delivery problem to the REM itself or a bad REM. Because things work intermittently I think the problem is more likely a power delivery problem, something like a bad, loose or resistive connection or cable. I would focus on power to the REM. There is fuse junction (11E in the diagram I have) near the battery with seven 40 amp fuses that supplies power to all things controlled by the REM and the REM itself. These 40 amp fuses supply power to groups of other fuses in the REM. I would check the cable (especially since the battery was changed) and connections from the battery to this fuse junction, the connections and fuses in the junction paying special attention to the fuse and connections associated with 11E/7, which supplies power to the REM electronics (among other things). You could also swap out the 10 amp fuses 11D/1 and 11/D2 in the REM with other 10 amp fuses as simple check. These fuses supply power to the REM control electronics. I would also check any ground wire coming from the REM for a solid connection. Focus on the REM and power from the battery to the REM first, I think you may find your problem. Good luck.

Doug, could you send me some pics of what you are talking about. I am not sure, but want to take a shot at it before i give this to the shop again. Are the 40 amp fuses square and black? do they just pop out? a little more guidance would be good. is the REM behind the fuses? what does it look like? thanks

See the attached file, pictures of the fuse junction near the battery with 40amp fuses and Rear Electronic Module (REM).
